Song: Mantra

Please send feedback. Should I ever tab again, should I die? Or did you
kindof like it?

Okay, well I'm not posting this in the false pretense that I have it a
100% correct or 100% complete, but I think I accurately transcribed a
large amount of this song, definently enough to cover it. I hope you enjoy
it. This uses two guitars but you can figure out when to play the parts
just by listening.

Standard Tuning

Opening Riff:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
--------14--14--9--9--10--10--12--12--10--10--9--9--3--3---------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
12--12-----------------------------------------------------------------

Onto the heavy! *this can be played with double strokes or not*

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-2--14--9--10--12--10--9--5--------------------------------------------
-2--14--9--10--12--10--9--5--------------------------------------------
-0--12--7--8---10--8---7--3--------------------------------------------

Next Stanza: Some out of tune sounding chord that is cool but I'm not
sure if I figured it out right, this is how I play it.

----------------------------------------------------------{-------------
----------------------------------------------------------{-------------
--3--------------------3----------------------------------{-------------
--2-------X--X--X--X---2----------------------------------{-14----------
--2-------X--X--X--X---2----------------------------------{-14----------
--0-------X--X--X--X---0----------------------------------{-12----------
[Repeat 4 times, on 4th time use only 3 string scratches]

Enter Lyrics: This part makes you sound really cool (even if you aren't) :P
Palm Mute is pretty heavy so that the bass really hums.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
--0--0--12--12--7--7--8--8--10-10--8--8--7--7--3--3--------------------

After a few stanzas the first solo joins in with the verse section. Then
it moves back to the heavy part (wee!!) with a few extra string scratches in
there, I'm sure you can figure it out.

Okay this next part is the most iffy of my transcription, but I know the
notes I have are rights, it's all the damn mutes that make it a litte rough.
I think this sounds right though, you slide between these chords.
Starts with 8 string mutes and then
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
----98--87--76---65-----X--X--X--X--2----X--X--X--X--2---------------
----98--87--76---65-----X--X--X--X--2----X--X--X--X--2------------------
----76--65--54---43-----X--X--X--X--0----X--X--X--X--0---------------

Add some mutes in there, lol.

Now go back to that rather Odd chord I mentioned before, the 3rd section.

Last section

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
--9--9--9--10--10--10--13--13--13--14--14--14--13--13--13--10--10--10--
--9--9--9--10--10--10--13--13--13--14--14--14--13--13--13--10--10--10--
--7--7--7--8---8---8---11--11--11--12--12--12--11--11--11--8---8---8--
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------{----------------------------------------------------------
-------------{----------------------------------------------------------
--9--9--9----{--10--10--10----------9---9----------------9--------------
--9--9--9----{--10--10--10----------9---9----------------9--------------
--7--7--7----{--8---8---8-----------7---7----------------7--------------
-------------{----------------------0---0-------------------------------
[repeat] [loud!] [Acoustic strum]

The noise you hear in this track is actually made with Adam's guitar. He has some kind of sustainer he must have the same shit I got 'cuz I can do it, too.

I'm going to go with what Asz said, makes a lot of sense. Doesn't sound anything like a guitar, more like a voice or a kitty.

A cat? Where the hell do you guys get that from?! Please, don't ruin the song for me! I love it, it has great music, so don't make me think of a poor cat being squeezed every time I listen to it. I would very much rather think it is a sort of prayer or whatever.

I believe Mantra is a Buddhist form of meditation also in which you relax and say certain words over and over again.

Heres what Mantra really is: Tool fan Yaz (yazkuge@hotmail.com) found a 2001 interview with Maynard in the Japanese magazine "Buzz" where MJK stated for the first time in public ("a treat for the Japanese fans," he says) that the track "Mantra" is the sound of him squeezing one of his Siamese cats. The cat made such a weird noise that he immediately recorded this, played it real slow and made a track out of it.

Yeh, it is the cat. Look through old toolband.com newsletters...theres one around Halloween or so where Maynard had fussed on him for telling what Mantra was...and he convinced Maynard to let him give a multiplechoice answer.

Mantra: A sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation, or incantation, such as an invocation of a god, a magic spell, or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mystical potentialities.

No, Asz is correct. It's Maynard's siamese cat after being squeezed, then the sound produced being distorted and slowed down. I did exactly what you said using GoldWave, and even after trying 5 or 6 different speeds, it sounds closer to a cat. I almost hear occassional hisses, grunts, and "sighs" from it. Asz's post comes directly from here, I think it's safer to say it's true: http://toolshed.down.net/faq/faq.html

I squeeze cats all the time when I recite prayers. L-O-L. actually I don't, but the thought of Maynard squeezing a cat is kinda funny. We probably won't ever know what exactly created the noise, but it's a really great intodruction to schism.
