***Note: Adam plays both the synth and the guitar at the same live.
Quite the talented guy, his timing with the synth and rythmn
with the guitar were great. He's practiced that's for sure.
The synth is on the ground in front of him and he just steps
on a certain pedal on the synth to change notes.

I have read the other comments on this page and I appreciate all the different views and think it's wonderful that this page exists (first of all). I think this song, contrary to what a few other people have said, has an underlying tone of wistfulness; yearning. Maynard (praise him) seems to possess an understanding that human potential to co-operate and repress the selfish qualities of human nature are not being fulfilled. This song seems to me to recount his moment of awakening when he realised the futulity of most human behaviour. I fully concur that this song is a call to the world to join the higher consciousness - as a Buddhist, this concept is familiar to me and if anyone has any questions, please contact me. I also agree that the notion of "reflection", and the admission of "this light is not my own" expresses the idea that as humans, we are very dependant on others to do our thinking for us - to me this, this song promotes free thought. I went to the Tool concert near me just recently, and, being a twig of a girl, I was almost snapped in the mosh, but when this song was played everyone stopped and there was this ethereal stillness and sadness in the crowd. This is my absolute favourite song in the world; I saw its impact on thousands of angry teens, I know the impact it's had on me; now I think it's up to us who appreciate the majesty and beauty and insightfulness of Tool to spread this song's message to the whole world. The last time I can remember crying was seeing this song peformed live. Listening to it again (right now, actually) I get goosebumps. Maynard is a GENIUS.

The last words "before we pine away" are sang in the end with such a passion, it,s awesome. "pine away" might mean "before we end up destroying ourselves".

I would have to agree with Parabola898. Reflections translucent rythms and mezmorizing drum beats are almost hypnotic. it sets me in a mood of peace and spiratualistic happiness. To me the strongest meaing of this that we are all one mind capable of all thats imagined and conceivable. I think when Maynard is peaking to his listeners followers, and he is tellign us to "crucify our ego before it's far too late to leave behind this place, so negative and blind and cynical." To me it makes sense that he is telling us we need to leave behind our current state of consciousness and evolve into our next state. Maynards lyrics are so open to interpetation that tools music can relate to everybody. Tool is for anybody who can truly appreciate great art.
