Em
Is it a mean streak
C D
you'd swear you'd swear
Em
we never seen a stranger round here
C
is it the way the dust clings to the air
D Em
but you'd swear you'd swear
Is it a mean streak
a desolation sound
a copy of desire oh nothing's that far down
a mean streak on a western swing
on Tv saying the damnedest thing
Em
Meanstreak
C D
you'd swear you'd swear
Em
we never seen a stranger round here
C
it's the way the dust clings to the air
A
after a stranger's been there
A
you'd swear you'd swear
Em C D Em
Is it a mean streak
to a certain degree
come whistlin down the crookedist street
a mean streak in the ghost state
between the certain and the hesititing
Em
A mean streak
C D
you'd swear you'd swear
Em
we never seen a stranger round here
C
it's the way the dust clings to the air
A
after a stranger's been there
A
you'd swear you'd swear
C
was that you there?
A
that was you there
C
was that you there?
A
that was you there
(I'm not sure about this last bit)
The ssh sound of the bottoms of their boots
on the tops of the grass
as their haywagon
rolled past
and I'd swear I's swear
the way the dust clings to the air
after the stranger's been there
I'd swear I'd swear
that that was you there

| Two things. Firstly, the "stranger" line against the TV reference makes me think this song is about someone real and influential appearing on the news (like a politician) and suddenly saying something that makes them seem like an entirely differently, entirely worse person than you thought. "We never seen a stranger 'round here", we never thought we'd be betrayed by someone who said they had the same morality as we did. The last part about haywagon's might be a sly dig at the current US government as mock-cowboys. | |

| Can anyone figure this one out? Great song, but I can't figure the meaning out to save my life. | |
