Wheat Kings, The Tragically Hip
From FULLY COMPLETELY, 1992

Tabbed by Duncan Koerber

This the second acoustic guitar tab ONLY. The first acoustic plays the
chords I've listed above the tab. An electric guitar comes into the
song halfway through but I have no inclination to tab that.

Remember, in this song the guitar I have tabbed is in the right channel,
while the electric guitar and the first guitar are on the left channel.
When listening to BOTH channels (which I'm sure you will do), some of the
parts I've tabbed won't be as obvious or very clear. Keep that in mind
if you think you see sections that need corrections. :)

The song "Wheat Kings", from Fully Completely, is mainly about David Milgaard. Milgaard, who was from Saskatchewan, was wrongly convicted of murder and served over 20 years in prison before being released. Wheat kings are the nicknames for those giant wheat silos you see on the prairies on farms and such. Gord probably got inspiration for the song title from the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Western Hockey League team in Brandon, Manitoba. In terms of "Wheat kings and pretty things", the Pretty Things were a band that the Hip used to listen to a lot when they were first starting out in 1983, and they covered a few Pretty Things songs in their sets way back in the beginning, so this line is probably a tribute to that band. The entire lyric "wheat kings and pretty things/lets just see what the morning brings" was probably written as if Milgaard himself was saying this as he's looking out his jail cell window, out at the prairies, hence the "wheat kings and pretty things" and his undying hope that he'll be exonerated, and his optimism towards this end: "Let's just see what the morning brings."

Wonderfull, amazing song I think the lines: In his Zippo lighter, he sees the killer's face Maybe it's someone standing in a killer's place are really amazing becuase it kind of says this man that is in prison is taking the place of the person that actually did it

Personally, I think the system failed this kid miserably. Underneath the nastiness though, I bet you Milgaard turned his life quickly around. There is no silver lining here, just pure misery. Is Milgaard a changed man from the experience though, I'm sure. Maybe that was the point to start with, but I think the degree of punishment he received was far, far too harsh. For being a little shit as somebody said before, a couple years in juvie detention might have changed him around, not twenty years in adult prison.

Oh yeah...I can see somet sort of connection, maybe it was subconsciously? 'cuz I know the song is about this Milgaard guy from Saskatchewan who spent 20 years in jail for a murder that he didn't commit. Ouch! Now that's bad :( Anyway, no hard feelings in the Blink comments, eh? ^_^ I wasn't calling you guys childish. Those people just aren't even worth arguing with. The know shit all.

Nolesy, I think it's a little premature to decide whether a 17 year old is "going anywhere". He was a little shit, yes, but that was mostly the company he kept. It seems like you're saying his incarceration was somehow excusable, because it got a no-goodnik like him off the street. He was a kid when he went in, and middle-aged when he got out. His entire young-adulthood was taken. I know I wouldn't trade mine for $10 million. Awesome song, btw.

'Wheat Kings' is to The Tragically Hip which parallels to 'The Hurricane' by Bob Dylan. Canada and America will be the best of friends forever.

the big differance of course between hurricane and wheat kings is that dylan wrote hurricane as a protest to him being in prison, where milgaard was already at the end of his time,
