Verse 1:

Em G C Em G C Em G C Em
I hopelessly helplessly wonder why,

G C Em G C
Everything's gotta change, around me, mhmm

Em G C Em G C
I'd tell it to your face, but you lost your face along the way,

Em G C Em G C
And I'd say it on the phone, if I thought you were alone,

Em G C
Why do things have to change?

Chorus:

D G C
You don't need my pictures on your wall,

D G C
You say you need no one,

D G C
And you don't need my secret midnight call,

D G C
I guess you need no one,

Em G C
Is anybody waiting at home for you,

Em G C D
Cause it's time that will tell if it's heaven if it's hell or if it's,

Em G C
Anybody waiting at home for you,

Em G C
Cause it's time that will tell this tale

Verse 2:

Em G
You're in and out, up and down,

Em G
Wonder if you're lost or found,

Em G C
But I got my hands on you,

Fill:

Em G
Are you strong enough to tow the line,

Em G
Are you gonna make me yours,

Em G
Or do I make you mine,

Em G
I'm in and out I'm up and down,

Em G
Wonder if I'm lost or found,

Em G C
But I need your hands on me now,

Chorus:

D G C
You don't need my pictures on your wall,

D G C
You say you need no one,

D G C
And you don't need my secret midnight call,

I agree with most, it's about break-up. And like most, I can sadly relate. About a month ago I broke up with my boyfriend Jay and this sort of became my 'song'. He acts as though he never needed me and it hurts. I'd like to make a change to the lyrics....at the beginning, it's "I hopelessly, helplessly wonder why/ everything GOTTA change around me." It makes much more sense and if you listen, you can tell.

This song is after a breakup, and one person, we'll say the guy, is asking why it happened, and trying to deal with the fact that she doesn't want him in her life anymore even though he's very much still attached to her.

To me it's the coming together of two ex's. The girl has moved on more than he has and has started dating. The guy was devastated by the relationship so she doesn't really talk to him about seeing other people. IN the beginning he's obsessing over her and she's telling him that she doesn't need anyone let alone him. They get together for a little bit in the last verse to see if there's still something there and it's like a stand-off to see who will win who. He wonders if he's even strong enough to pull this relationship back up. He's frustrated with her and wants to know if it's going to be back with him or if it's going to be this other guy she is seeing.

This is such a beautiful song! The little guitar break in the second verse after he says "but I got my hands on you" gets me every time. It is by far my favorite song from Train. It makes me want to cry.

Wow, this song is amazing. Right from the very first guitar cord, you fall in love with the song. The first part is almost adictive too!...I think this song's about a guy who is really in love with someone who will just never feel the same way for him. She thinks that she doesn't need him but he stands as a constant reminder of how she can't do it alone, but in the end he knows that it's all hopeless.

I agree that this is Train's best song. And that opening guitar is sooooo lovely and delicate. And I love the poetic use of language in the lyrics. "Hopelessly, helplessly", "you're in and out up and down, wonder if you're lost or found" There's such great sound to the words, they're really like an instrument themselves.
