Bm G D Em
I read it all, every word, and I still don't understand a thing
G D Em
What had you heard ?
Bm G D Em
What had you heard, was it love, was it take another walk in the dark ?
G D Em
You'll never learn
D Asus4 A Em G
I'd pray to god if there was heaven, but heaven seems so very far from here
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old thing
G D Em
Just a yin and a yang or a couple of pipe dreams
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old pain
G D Em G
Whether you win or you lose isn't gonna change a single thing
Bm G D Em
I stood in line and a thought crossed my mind, I had been dreaming
G D Em
But I didn't mind
Bm G D Em
I signed the line and the woman looked right through me
G D Em
She didn't smile
D Asus4 A Em G
I'd pray to god if there was heaven, but heaven seems so very far from here
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old thing
G D Em
Just a yin and a yang or a couple of pipe dreams
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old pain
G D Em G
Whether you win or you lose isn't gonna change a single thing
Bm G D Em 2x
D Asus4 A Em G
I'd pray to god if there was heaven, but heaven seems so very far from here
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old thing
G D Em
Just a yin and a yang or a couple of pints, please
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old pain
G D Em
Whether you win or you lose isn't gonna change a single thing
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old fear
G D Em
Just a link in a chain, just a puppet on a string
G D Em
And it all boils down to the same old fear
G D Em
Whether you win or you lose
G D Em
Whether you win or you lose
G D Em
Whether you win or you lose
G D
Whether you win or you lose

| This is my FAVORITE song. I love the beautiful melody and lyrics. i interpreted it as kind of just being yourself and not getting caught up in image or the hectic world, or something, cuz in the end its not whether you win or lose, but how you lived each day. that kinda thing. | |

| I can totally relate to this song, especially the 1st line at present: ' I read it all, every word, and I still don't understand a thing' --> that's how I feel every day when I'm revsing for my A-Levels! :) But seriously, the song is fantastic. 'I'd pray to god if there was heaven, but heaven seems so very far from here' - how I can relate to that line. | |

| I guess this song is just about feeling that in the end, nothing really matters, money, looks, whatever. and the part about heaven being so far away seems like he thinks we've done this all to ourselves and maybe we wont get to see heaven... I guess... not really sure... Any ideas? Still, It's one of my favourite songs. | |

| I really agree with agirlcandream, the first time i heard that lyric i immediately thought it was about the bible. i'd never really thought bout the rest of the song in that way except that life was boring and repetitive and he's trying to get through it perhaps by finding meaning in religion and hoping you get something in the end (to go to heaven) | |

| "And it all boils down to the same old pain..." This line reminds of Bright Eyes, One Foot In Front Of the Other (Landlocked Blues) "And it all boils down to one quotable phrase, if you love something give it away..." | |

| i always thought this song was about falling in love with someone that you really felt you had something in common with.. and for some reason she writes a letter to him and breaks up with him ["i read it all, every word, and i still don't understand a thing"]. he thinks about losing love and how life is very much the same. it goes around in an endless circle of pain. thats just what i think.. FAVORITE PART: "what had you heard? was it love? was it take another walk in the dark? you'll never learn.." | |

| the religion interpretation is very interesting and accurate. but the middle verse and "what had you heard? was it love, was it take another walk in the dark?" throw me off. i am confused by the people involved in the song. is it written in a diaristic manner of using a third person to think of one self or is he literally trying to understand another person? there is certainly an unawareness going on of some sort of contract. he was given something to read, he doesn't understand it, but still signs it. the woman who gave him the text (and possibly wrote it?) realizes he didn't understand it, and therefore, she doesn't smile. by the chorus, i can tell he's not worried about that 'contract' and the fact he signed it without knowing what it was because he doesn't fear to lose, or care to win. and if he thinks this way, there is no need in praying, is there? also, "i'd pray to god if there was heaven / but heaven seems so very far from here"... he is not denying there is a heaven by saying it's far, but still he's not praying to god. here's something i found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipe_dream | |

| I'm not really sure whats it's about, maybe something to do with being in an imposible stuation that causes a lot of pain? Anyway, I love it. It has such a beautiful melody and the way it's sung makes me want to cry. | |

| I think this song is about being stuck in a really hopeless place. Just living every single day in the same way and not finding any joy in your life. | |

| No, you guys. This song is so obvious. It's about religion... I mean, really! "I read it all, every word/And I still don't understand a thing" He's talking about the Bible here. He has tried to understand and none of it makes sense to him. "I'd pray to God if there was heaven/But heaven seems so very far from here/And it all boils down to the same old thing/Whether you win or lose isn't gonna change a single thing" Back to the Bible thing- he doesn't know whether or not to believe in heaven, but regardless it all boils down to the same thing. That's a reference to life and dying. People spend their whole lives worrying about religion and what's going to happen when they die but in the end, you just die. Win or lose, whether you believed in a heaven and you were right, or whatever, you're still dead. That's just my take on it. I could be completely wrong but that's what makes sense to me. When he says "couple of pints, please" it makes me think of communion and the wine they drink. haha. | |

| Cause the song is quite repetitive i think it is relating to life, how life just repeats itself every day until that random thing makes it interesting....and then back to the boring repeating itself ^_^ | |
