For your information, Fran is not against war in general. He's against *this* war. This is what he said introducing the song at a gig in Oslo 2003: "I'm not against war, right. I think if someone drops a bomb on your house, well, I'm up to fight, you know, I'm gonna fight. I would do that, if someone dropped a bomb on your mum and dad's house and killed them, you'd be like "okay!" but... I don't see any bombs dropping on any of us, you know, we had the planes fly into the buildings, but that had nothing to do with it. Millions of people marched and said "no way". [someone] was on tv yesterday saying that he thinks they destroyed all their weapons of mass destruction ten years ago. So it's all about money and greed. And the biggest weapon of mass destruction - at the moment anyway - is aids and they're not spending 87 billion dollars - you know, they could wipe it out like that, they could help people, but they're not. They just want to - I don't know what they want to do...! It's crazy."

isnt the line "But when you spoke my heart sank" ? That would fit better with the words. it seems hes talking about pretty people, but with no real personality or intelligence "The light is on but no one's home" basically means that. and when his heart sant hes dissapointed because they arent really interesting at all, haha its funny because this song is so sweet but the lyrics are so opposite

Anachronism: I think most of us are well aware of the Rwandan genocide, and if that's the basis for this song then explain the following. "don't need an invitation to drop in upon a nation" The Rwandan genocide was an interal conflict started by the national government of Rwanda, there was no outside nation dropping in without an invitation.

i got an account because i was amazed that noone had commented on the real meaning of this song: the u.s. war in Iraq. This obviously a satire on the manner bush went about invading Iraq. Because Bush had no legal reason for going into Iraq, the best he could do was use faulty information to try to scare the rest of America into believing it a worthwhile cause. If you kept close attention to the news during the first year of occupation, you'll notice that bush constantly changed his reason. originally (if you can remember) it was because of very vague reports of ryacin and possibly enriched uranium. It was only much later, when neither of these panned out, that Bush changed his focus to "WMD" (in the chemical sense, because evidence was found that Saddam had tested chemicals on kurds) and eventually "terrorism" (no connection to al qaeda). This song shows how frustrating it is that so many american's act like sheep and actually support this dispicable man, the main reason being because they don't pay attention to what's been happening. According to the exit polls of the 2004 election, 64% of postgraduate citizens voted for Kerry, in other words the smartest of the smart. This song, instead of seeming outwardly hostile, has lines like "the beautiful occupation, you don't need an invitation," making a joke of how little some american's care that we went to iraq and are losing troops without a good reason (invitation). The last line, "don't call the united nations," should give it away, because the U.S. was actually told by the UN security council NOT to go in, but we did anyway. I don't know how I could make this any clearer. Fantastic song by the way.

Fran wrote this before any mention of wars, but he had this weird feeling that it was coming, and he could do nothing about it. The song is about feeling helpless. I love this song. When I first listened to '12 Memories' this was the song that jumped out at me. It's still one of my favorites.
