This song, alone with Coldplay's The Scientist & God Put A Smile On Your Face, Neil Finn's 'Sinner', The Verve's Bitter Sweet Symphony, Joan Osbornes's 'what if god was One Of Us' is the Imagine (John Lennon) of the late 1990's and the new millenium beyond. They are both spirtual and agnostic/atheist anthems in one. To me the opening verse is spiritual. Heaven perhaps when we die? Some Big Brother government agency/higher force/alien entity watching/protecting over us? The seond verse is Zeigiest, the rat race pursuits of modern capitlistic society. Very existential and profound. This is the grunt of the song - the chorus. What is wrong? What is right? Does black and white exist? Or is it all one big muddle of shades of many grey. We all want to live forverver, longer, better and healthier but mortality beckons eventually. '...The circle only has one side...' This is the science/mathermatics of the song...as opposed to optimistic 'believing' opening verse. The final verse is a metaphor/extension of the themes posed in the previous two. It's stating/summarising it too. The best way I can explain it is a comparison to Neil Finn's/Crowded House's 'Driving Me Mad': '...say what lies between us? a host of everyday distractions. most of all it's MUSIC taking me...' Opening up the chord is one the most primitive/caveman human instincts, a reference to the healing powers of music and how it can cross all boundaries and unite the human race.

Amit, the video does not define the song. it is only one person's interpretation. i will hand it to you, tho. the video is sweet.

Prob my favourite Travis song from this album. The lyrics are just fantastic and I don't understand how Fran can underestimate his band by thinking that they're nothing special. They're seminal for this era which is unfortunatly flooded with teen-pop acts who come and go so quickly.

yes! on the live in glasgow dvd fran uses a great metaphor to explain this song. something like "we are all on this world, and the world is just one big circle with one side. so next time your at odds with someone, remember your on the same side as them" fran is genius.

Ok. I'll give it a shot. First verse--statement of belief in an afterlife and "someone" (God?) who will take you through a retrospect on your life, and then we'll all realize... Chorus--I think the chorus is basically saying, "We are all the same." We are all typically unsatisfied with what we have. We all want to stay alive (i.e., not die). etc. "There is no wrong, there is no right" seems to be a statment of relativism, and considering the first verse seems to be about heaven and God, I'd take that to mean "everyone goes to heaven." "Circle only has one side" is the same kind of ecumenical statement--"we're all the same." Second verse--We all want peace (harmony) because then we'll all be safe (e.g., no more religious war in Middle East, Ireland, etc.). The reference to "major" and "minor" key, I think, are referencing different types of people. "Open up the chord" could perhaps be referring to removing the middle tone in a triad (i.e., what makes the chord "major" or 'minor"), and then the major and minor are the same. Perhaps this is a way of saying, "let's put aside our differences, because we're all the same, we're all going to heaven, etc." don't know... what do you think?
