{Verse}
G D A A G D A A G
From the brightest star Comes the blackest hole
You had so much to offer Why did you offer your soul?
I was there for you baby When you needed my help
Would you deny for others What you demand for yourself?
{pre-chorus}
D A D A G
Cool down mama, cool off
Cool down mama, cool off
{chorus}
Em G
You speak of signs and wonders
D A
But I need something other
Em G
I would believe if I was able
Em G G/F#
But I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table

{verse}
You were pretty as a picture / It was all there to see
Then your face caught up with your psychology
With a mouth full of teeth / You ate all your friends
And you broke every heart thinking / every heart mends
{pre-chorus}
{chorus}
You speak of signs and wonders
But I need something other
I would believe if I was able
But I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table

{chorus}
Where you live should not decide
Whether you live or whether you die
Three to a bed / Sister Ann, she said
Dignity passes by

{chorus}
And you speak of signs and wonders
But I need something other
I would believe if I was able
I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table {Verse riff until end}

That's great and I respect your opinion, but, honestly, no one cares.

Exactly. but being mad for the rich not providing to the poor - the poor that are kept poor because of debt to the rich - does help when that anger prompts you to organize efforts to relieve the poor from debt and to help deliver drugs to the sick. that's what the band has done.

Bono is a great humanitarian! Why, in his whole life he's donated $0 dollars to charities!

This song is about how America and its wealthiest people don't do enough to help solve world hunger. The title suggests that crumbs from our table could help starving people in Africa. Bono indicts America for being hypocritical with these lines: Would you deny for others What you demand for yourself? Bono could not be reached for comment as he was stepping off his private jet and into his limousine. quoted from http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worst

My new favorite from HTDAAB. I adore the second verse. And the guitars in this song are amazing. The solo in the middle reminds me of the guitar solo from WALK ON. A 10 out of 10!!!! :)

I agree with webslinger. When I first heard this song, I was struck with shame for the American Evangelical Church we say we want to spread the Gospel to the world, but somehow we believe that we only need to "speak" the gospel of repentence and do very little in the way of comforting the sick and dying. How can they believe if they are hungry and we are wasteful? "I would believe if I was able But I’m waiting on the crumbs from your table"

Being mad at folks for being rich doesn't really help anything.

This song, in part, is an attack against The Church, because "it was slow to respond to the Aids emergency, and very judgmental about people with AIDS"

oh my, and you know that, right?You're his accountant and you know that all that time he was in africa doing volunteer work he was getting paid. And he's getting paid while he's running around trying to get governments, key word: governments, to help towards raising enough money to change millions of peoples' lives. But I understand you would actually need a brain to realise that the causes that Bono's fighting for (thirld world countries' debt and AIDS problems) can't be fixed with a donation of even a few million dollars. Maybe you should check your facts better.

One of the great things about U2 is the ability to view the meaning in a spiritual way as well. Try viewing this song with those shades. As for the music Steve Lilywhite has always brought The Edge front and center. This is obvious with HTDAAB. I’ve seen them over 20 times since 85 and I can’t wait for next years tour. It’s like Church for me
