U2 The Ground Beneath Her Feet
(Words by S. Rushdi)

From the soundtrack to the Million Dollar Hotel.

Tabbed by Mark Jones 15/10/00.

This is my interpretation of the song based on Bono and The Edge's
acoustic performance on TFI Friday on St. Patricks Day 2000.

The chords required are:

Bm : 799777
F#m : 244222
G : 355433
A : 577655

This chord progression is used throughout the intro and verses:
Bm F#m G A

For the intro and first two verses I use this picking:

Bm F#m G A
E|-7--------0-|-2--------0-|-3--------0-|-5--------0-|
A|---9--------|---4--------|---5--------|---7--------|
D|-------9----|-------4----|-------5----|-------7----|
G|-------7----|-------2----|-------4----|-------6----|
B|-------7----|-------2----|-------3----|-------5----|
E|-------7----|-------2----|-------3----|-------5----|
^
On these bits start with the E string
And strum up towards the D.

And now for the song:

Verse 1: (pick chords)
Bm F#m G A
All my life I worshipped her
Bm F#m G A
Her golden voice, her beauties beat
Bm F#m G A
How she made us feel how she made me real

Chorus: (strum chords)
G F#m
And the ground beneath her feet
G A
And the ground beneath her feet

Verse 2: (pick chords lyric structure slightly more complicated)
Bm F#m G A Bm
Now I can't be sure, be sure of anything
F#m G A Bm
Black is white and cold is heat
F#m G A Bm F#m
For what I worshipped stole my love away

Chorus: (strum chords)
G F#m
It was the ground beneath her feet
G A
It was the ground beneath her feet

Middle 8: (Strum chords from here on in)
Bm F#m G A
Go lightly down your darkened way
Bm F#m G A
Go lightly on the ground
Bm F#m G A
I'll be down there in another day
G A
I won't rest until your found

Play middle 8 again, but replace words by do do do's

Outro:

Bm (strum once)
Let me love you
A (strum once)
Let me rescue you
G A
Let me take where two roads meet
Bm
And I'll come back above
A G F#m
when there is only love
G F#m
Only love
G A
Only love
Bm (strum once to end)
Only love

Hope you enjoy it. There are mp3's available on the web if you can't
get the timings (try www.zoonation.com as a starting point)

lol at joeytheboy - sorry as said by kingmikeking it was written by Salman Rushdie, who was a muslum who converted to christianity and wrote a book called 'satanic verses'. It was a book basicly saying the Koran was an evil. Needless to say this did not make him very poplular and there was a death threat put out on his life for 10 years. He went into hiding to avoid being killed and at the end of the 10 years he pops up at Bono's house - apparently he had been hanging out there. Anyway, he wrote this song and it is about the koran. "all my life i worshiped her". I think but i am not sure of this but 'the ground benth her feet' is some from of obsucure (or maby not obsure) quote or referance from the the Koran.

Hey everyone. Check it out this is my first contribution! The last 3 postings are all slightly correct. The lyrics are by Salman Rushdie, whether there is a Ismlamic subtext is contentious and an interesting reading so I am not outwardly dismissing it. The facts: 'The Ground Beneath Her Feet' is also the name of Rushdie's 1999 novel in which there is a love triangle. The novel is narrated by the third wheel who is a photographer. I will not ruin the story because it is so moving in so many ways. The song is sung by the 'hero' of the novel Ormus Cama in a beautiful passage towards the novel's end. The woman does actually get swallowed by an earthquake! Whilst reading 'TGBHF' I was struck with the post-modern continuity of Rushdie's world having read his 2nd novel 'Midnight's Children' and have once again been hit with the continuity stick as I am reading 'The Satanic Verses' at present. Of course the U2 song takes on its own identity, especially being on the OST for 'The Million Dollar Hotel' but I personally always see this song as out of the novel. Is it just me or does any one else know about the alternative closing lines of the song: 'She was my country road/ My city street/ My sky above/ My only Love/ And the ground beneath my feet' ?

umm.. as far as i know this song has nothing to do with the koran but i guess that would be because i don't really know anything about the koran. but yes, xfmjunky is pretty much exactly right. this is the exact song sung by ormus, which he made in the beginning of the novel for vina and then added the alternate lines (the ones at the bottom of the previous entry) when he sang the song later when he learned she had died. overall, the ground beneath her feet might be my favorite salman rushdie novel, or novel in general at that. and i love this song because it reminds me so much of the book

ok first of all, ive heard that salman rushdie did write the book 'satanic verses'..but he never converted..but anyways i cud be wrong on that but as far as reference to the Quran goes.. In the Quran it says that beneath a mothers feet, is heaven.. so maybe that has some sort of implication in this song?... Never The Less, a great song, one of U2's besst..among their other great tracks.. the lyrics and the music both never fail to blow me away.

Uncle Chop Shop seems to have never read the Satanic Verses- it's open to LOTS of interpretation. Personally, I like Rushdie's poetry better (Arab culture has a wonderful poetic tradition), & I think it's cool that Bono was humble enough to give up the reins (for once!). As far as interpretation, I agree with xfmjunky
