"The Unforgettable Fire"
Dm Bb
Ice, your only rivers run cold
Dm Bb
These city lights, they shine in silver and gold
Dm Bb Dm Bb F
Dug from the night, your eyes as black as coal
C Eb
Walk on by, walk on through, walk till you run
Bb Dm Bb
And don't look back, for here, I am
Dm Bb Dm
Carnival, the wheels fly and the colors spin, through alcohol
Bb
Red wine that punctures the skin
Dm Bb F
Face to face, in a dry and waterless place
C Eb Bb
Walk on by, walk on thorugh, so sad to besiege your love so head on
F C
Stay tonight, stay tonight in a lie
Eb Bb F
I'm only asking but I think you know
C
Come on take me away
Gm
Come on take me away
A Dm
Come on take me home, home again
Instrumental:
Bb Dm Bb Dm Bb Gm A
Dm Dm Dm

And if the mountain should crumble, or disappear into the sea

And if you save it all, save your love

| The band had attended a Hiroshima art exhibit while writing this album (namely giving them inspiration for the title and of possibly the title track). This song is very beautiful, but based on what we know...it is probably about the bombing of Hiroshima. However, it does quite sound like a song about a one night stand or some sort of love affair. | |

| My friend reckons this song is about Jesus and his crucifixtion. Can't remeber all the exact reasons for this, but it made perfect sense when she explained it. | |

| Oh, I forgot to mention that the intro seems to start with a keyboard right? it isn't. It's Edge playing the intro by guitar, using a shimmer effect. It starts sounding as keyboard but fades in like a guitar. The rest of the song you drown in guitar-delays/reverbs, the pounding drums and even a small orchestra (violins). Too bad that this song is rarely heard live (quite some work to put this all these sounds by 4 man). I think this review has absolutely nothing to do anymore with songmeanings, but it's maybe refreshing for other reviewers to analyze the pure musical side, I'll stop it. | |

| This song is one of the my favourite U2 songs. I don't care about meaning. But music and lyrics make me think about passion. | |

| "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!" –Revelation 18:2 This song is a reflection of things to come —mainly based from Revelation— as we see imagery of a blackened sun, the moon turned red as blood and meteorites falling from the sky. Of course, Bono makes this a personal confliction, as thoughts of being consumed as a martyr, during the Second Coming of the Lord, plague him. He is also divided between his faith and the world (which will surely end up as Babylon). | |

| By the way, I like to refer to that snippet as The Spark, as in "the spark that set the flame," or in this case, the Fire. | |

| To me this song always meant that when things are black and the stars are falling down, all these things that are going bad around you and you're getting really mad. There's a fire! Something that makes you call out. | |

| As usual, I have sort of a strange metaphysical take on it. If life as we know it can only exist at the intersection of hydrogen and oxygen - the magic 'water of life' that Heinlien talks about in Stranger In A Strange Land, then the implication I get from this song is that the entity in the song is behind us, in a place with no water and hence no life, because without water, there isn't any life. Another interpretation which stirkes at me is 'dug from the night, your eyes as black as coal'.. I keep worrying that the coal we mine from the earth, and the oil, and whatnot, was doing important things where it was, and that we're hurting the earth.. maybe those veins of carbon were a elaborate sensor net that enabled Her to see, for example. We humans have a tendancy to monkey first and worry about what we're breaking second.. sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now. I need to be less negative anyway. | |

| The title refers to the art exhibit as stated. But does the song? And I don't think "one night stand" quite covers it. The temptation of desire and passion seems a little closer to the mark. Nobody's mentioned the contrast between the title and first line: The Unforgettable Fire Ice The fire of passion, of desire, shared with someone as cold an unloving as ice? It's as if the Unforgettable fire is this passion... unrequited... or weilded, without care for the object of your passion. Passion, so powerful, it's like the horrific fire of the atomic bomb. -Pie | |

| This is definitely about a one night stand. The song starts with a date ("Carnival, wheels fly and colors spin/Through alchohol, red wine that punctures the skin"). The singer is asking pretty blankly for casual sex ("So sad to besiege your love so head on"). He asks her to "stay tonight", but with the warning that he neither wants anything else ("If the mountain should crumble ... not a tear, no not I"), nor should she start falling for him (" Save your love, save it all/Don't push me too far"). It's an honest, if unromantic, song. I think it captures unobscenely but also unflatteringly the desire for the meaningless hookup that we all have from time to time. The honesty is good. | |

| Obvious references to Revelations, but with Bono's call backs, as if it doesn't apply to him. It's interesting to note that British (European?) pressing of the LP include a snippet of an early rendition of Fire after Shadows and Tall Trees. This is missing on the American LP and all CD releases (too bad). | |
