I am rarely convinced by lyrics. For one reason or another, lyrics never seem to make sense or even give a central idea. Also, lyrics are WAYYY too associated with love/sex/m-f relationships, which in my opinion, do not deserve the title of 'love.' This song deals with a truer, more powerful bond between parents and their children. I just want to tear up all the comments about how this song is about a man and a woman, cause they do not even deserve to take space here!!!! (jk) This song is so unique, in that it's so powerful and not overly glorious at the same time. This song is basically, as everyone slowlys says, a message from parents to growing (grown) up children. In a metaphoric sense, it's like when someone plays with a kite and feels like its just time to let go and let the kite soar away. Going in a little more in detail, the song is a muse about someone passing on experience to their children. In other words, it was like when my dad warned me about how cold the real world is, and that to survive, we need both mental and physically 'think skin.' I must mention this song is so wise: it summarizes a beautiful attitude towards human death! I am always so godamn pissed when I hear people moan about death and all the time they have left to live. This song describes death so casually, so indirectly, that it is perfectly fine to die. The only concern of death is the well-being of children, and that's the exact point of the song! why cry when the song is one to celebrate? just understand it correctly! (ok i admit, the song is moving) I was not much of a fan of U2, but this song completely changes my opinion. it also shows that rockstars DO think about their parents! si tienes tiempo, check out my comment on interpol's 'hands away'

This song is one of those that's meant to have a different meaning to everyone. Bono is particularly fond of writing songs that the fans can make their own. This song was written before the death of Bono's father Bob Hewson, but perhaps Bono wrote this when he began to "feel it coming"...an intuition that often occurs when it comes to the well-being of loved one. Either way, regardless of who it was written for or why, it's clearly a song about knowing when and how to let go of someone. Not only that, it's about preparing yourself and the people you love for death. It's a beautiful song that makes death seem less ominous and more of a beautiful transition. He's saying that the hardest thing about death is having to depart from the people who need you, so it's about teaching those you love that it's ok to move on after you've passed away, that it's good and healthy to keep going, that nothing is ever a final goodbye. Truly U2 at their finest here...

On the Elevation dvd Bono looks so sad and helpless I get the urge to hug him through the television screen! Later on he looks at Adam and he gives this really friendly encouraging look back, very sweet. Before the last verse Bono turns round and looks at Larry and when he turns back he's nodding. I always like to think he signaling that he's able to do the last verse solo, which is very brave. I like this song so much because it shows us the emotions behind the song so well. The hurt of loosing someone you loved, the strength of going on and the love we need to be able to do that. I keep writing: 'This song is one of my favorites', but that would give me a lot of favorite songs! I think it just shows how much I love U2.

This song is so sad :( There's several different meanings for this tune. All of them involve some sort of loss in thier life. A type of grief. It could be a parent, friend, family member, or even a break up....I'm now beginning to tear up as I read these lyrics again...thinking about something I just went through. Man...their lyrics are so powerful...one of my fave U2 tunes.

Bono's father, Bob, was laying in the hospital dying. Bono knew he was going to lose him soon, and this song, "Kite," was written for Bob. It was about having let go of someone you really love. In this case, Bono letting go of his Dad.

This is a song about losing someone who you care for deeply. "Who's to say where the wind will take you?" reminds me of a spirit going up to Heaven, yet the person who has lost someone is saying 'but I can't follow you there, it's a road I cannot take'. A beautiful song.
