yeh this song is really really mellow. i really love how they use alot of "pink floyd/juliana theory"ish space sounds and ambient soundscapes and other-worldly sound effects which bring out the musical shine in all of their songs

the guitar and the way their voices cut through each other and then meet back up again is a metaphor as well. cutting through the wood and the sound hits the ground at the same time.

My brother is trying to convince me that the second voice (sings lines such as "cutting cat faces in the pine" while Isaac sings "One more thing for you and I to do before we shut our eyes") is Edgar. Anyonec onfirm it or disconfirm?

I forgot to add that the story about the crazy fan named Ugly Casanova supposedly writing these songs is a fraud. Isaac thought that if he said they were someone elses songs, he could shop them around to other labels, without having to live up to the obligations he had to the label he was signed with at the time.

I think the "carving hearts" theory is pretty right on. Ugly Casanova isnt some deranged modest mouse fan. they redid parasites. it was an old modest mouse song. the lyrics are isaac brocks style. I love it.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time and was very happy to see so many comments on it. My interpretation of it was always of a loneyly lumberjack who cant get a handle on a past relationship and cant defeat beat the depression/insanity, and decides to take comfort in his surroundings, and enjoy the beauty of the natural world around him and not succumb to the problems in his head.

I like rolands spin on it but for all who thought issac is the mastermind behind this, hate to rain on your parade. Although some of his genius may be behind it, the concept behind Ugly Casanova and this album lies with a derranged Modest Mouse fan who broke into a show, they found a notebook full of poems and lyrics and I guess Issac struck up a deal with this guy and used his notebook to make "Sharpen Your Teeth" with lyrics like this though I'd like the fan to keep writing more

This song creates such a beautiful mood, I cant quite put my finger on the message I think it is trying to send, the writer himself (I think Isaac) is probably the only one who truly understands the strange lyrics. It sounds kind of sad, or depressive, but at the same time, its an amazing song, the mood draws me to it so much. It kind of gives me the sense of missing someone who was very close to me. Beautiful, beautiful song.

Well first of all you have to know that that Brock is from a logging town and has lived in one all of his life. I think he's trying to say that the rain is like his blood. When it rains the trees dry it up(use it), his heart stops but his blood's still alive...it's a metaphor. They carve cat faces into the logs, the teeth are made out of wood and they want pictures of it. That's just a weird line i think. "my chain hits the wood and the wood it turns to dust. i picture you as if you were a pine"-He's picturing you as dust. "we're wood screws all of our lives"- Saying that we all hold things together, all our lives are wound together. "tracing lines of cursive on the horizon "- while he's laying down he's looking at the clouds and following the designs(cursive) they make. "2X2 and 4X4 the pines they lay down, and i lay down with the southern range"-He's laying down...possibly dead like a tree that's been cut down. It's a stange song but it makes weird sense if you break it down.

This song is great. However, the dude who typed them out was a mouthbreathing retard. How about correcting those typos or at the very leasy differentiate between the first and second voice.

i think the tone of the song sounds pretty peaceful and soothing. sorta like "dont worry everything is fine". i sorta get a romantic vibe from this. a companionship and being with someone enjoying life and becoming apart of it. i mean when youre in love you can feel things and describe them in lovely ways and metaphors. i think maybe the lyrics "heart stopped pumping but my blood is still alive" can mean that he feels excited and the lyric "my eyes wake up but my brain is sleeping fine" can mean he's awake but feels like he's dreaming. i definitely take the "the rain hits the ground and the trees they dry it up" lyric to show how things are connected just like you could be with your "mate" if you will. your companion. the lyric "one more thing for you and i to do before we shut our eyes" i think shows how he is talking about himself and someone else and how they may be preparing to die but together which would be ok cause they would just be apart of everything itself. (maybe im off base with that but then again we can all be off base with everything). the lyrics "you blame me and ill blame you and we're both right" can mean that theres an equal scale between two. that we're both right cause noone is more or less of anything than the other. and i agree about the "cutting cat faces in the pine" how that can be symbolic for cutting hearts and i think that shows what two may do, young couples to be romantic. cut a heart in the tree together, maybe put their intials in the middle. im sure you know what im talking about. but then i think it shifts, i think their is a darker meaning maybe, that at this point the next lyric makes me wonder. "chain hits the wood and the wood it turns to dust, i picture you as if you were a pine". i think maybe it shows that a relationship when sour somewhere and now he's angry. he wants that person to disappear and turn to dust. then the lyric "heart stopped pumping blood is still alive" can now mean something different that maybe he's enraged, heartbroken but angry at the same time. then how "we're wood screws" can mean what was mentioned before that our lives are unstable and things are never what they may seem. can change at any moment. things can just go bad. then towards the end i feel he is just dying and getting ready to die. "lay down with the southern range" he's laying down, "swallows drop in" he's swallowing, maybe getting ready. probably remebering things at this time. maybe being happy and how he was happy. thinking about looking at the horizon with a past companion, being happy. referring back to the "cutting cat faces in the pine" making hearts in the trees. "mark the path back back to departure" can maybe say what he's doing. he's remebering everything and getting ready to leave. (to die maybe). "the pies lay down and i lay down with the southern range" can now mean that he's dead and he has became one with the earth and is now connected with it all. that his life is now apart of all life (rain hits the ground and the trees dry it up) and he had some memorable things worth living for like love maybe. i can be off but thats what i got from this song and thats what i got from the music too. towards the end of the song you get a sense of death with the repetetion of the "i lay down with the southern range" and how it drifts away slowly that he's slowly dying. music plays a good theme in meaning of the song. anyways. thats my view on it.

not to burst anyones bubble, but when he says "were wood screws" he doesnt literally mean wooden screws. wood screws are screws made specifically for use with wood. like metal screws are made for metal

No, no, it's a message about the passage of life. Here's how it goes: blood (represented as rain) --> trees trees --> cut down by chainsaws logs --> cut into 2x2's, 4x4's 2x2's, 4x4's --> build something on the southern range So, the person lies down on the southern range. Also, the "wood screws" bit is talking about screws made from the wood that came from the blood, thus people hold things together.

the last guy i pretty dead on. "carving cat faces in the pine" is a direct symbol for a carving a heart in a wooden tree. cat faces look like hearts. this is symbolic for love in a mortal life. "we're wood screws" is representative for our lives. wood screws arn't stable, they could break and split at any moment.

who the h*ll is typing the lyrics in? were temporary foundations in which we live "reflecting on past-away lives" we live, we produce, and we die were wooden screws that hold together bits of history, morals, and experiences but since were "wooden" we eventually rot we die and we'll all die hes gonna lay down on the southern range

Not to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure you are wrong. "Wood screws" is a metaphor, not something to be taken literal. The line makes no sense if you take it literal, but as a metaphor it has meaning.

i think the song is a bit deeper than what some have you have suggested. i get a sense of emptiness, longing, death, nostalgia for the vastness of everything. he is alive, but is not passionate about anything; nothing to get his heart pumping- he uses nature as a metaphor, implying essentially the cyclic nature to existence, the trees are lain by our hands, turning to dust--suggesting the finality of life--and he lays as well, perhaps reminiscing a life lived, and recognizing the beauty and/or futility of it--visions of the point of departure, where life begins, or life ends. this song deserves much more attention. i wish isaac would comment.

The idea of the deranged fan, is more than likely a farce. Edgar Graham is the supposed fan who nicknamed himself ugly casanova. Of course another version of this is that Isaac Brock was in Chicago, his drug of choice was considered uncool at hte time, and unattainable, so he got piss ass drunk and wrote the lyrics to this album. Either could be true, and they both could be false. The fact is we won't know until anybody from Ugly Casanova actually says so.

there's another lyric issac took from the pixies, AGAIN from the song 'dead'. how much does "my hearts stopped pumpn but my blood is still alive." sound like, "my blood is workin', but my, my heart is dead". they also took something from the pixies in heart cooks brain. not that i don't enjoy modest mouse's music, but it reeks of plagarism.

"they say his teeth are wood and they want my pictures of him." George Washington was known to have wooden false teeth, and the "pictures of him" that "they" want is a metaphor for money
