SECRETS by Van Halen
From the 1982 album _Diver Down_
Transcribed by DanAmrich@aol.com

As with most early VH, tune your guitar down a half-step to Eb across the board (high
to low: Eb, Ab, Bb, Gb, Db, Eb) in order to play in tune with the record.

Version 1: The Eddie Van Halen "Right" Way

The opening chord (as best as I can tell--the bass doubles on the low E string, and
your ear's mileage may vary)

NOTE: This intro chord is plucked in 6/4 time.

D -7-7-7-7-7-7-|-7-7-7-7-7-7-|-7-7-7-7-7-7-|-7-7-7-7-7-7--| (total of eight measures)

G ---------------------------------2------------------------------|
D ---------------------------------0------------------------------|

Version 2: The Dan Amrich "Obviously Wrong But More Comfy" Way

Main verse riff:

D -0-0--0-0---------------0-0--0-0------------------0---------|
A -----------------------------------0-2-3-----2-0------------|
E ------------------------------------------------------------|

This is what I've always used and it's a hell of a lot easier to play, so long as you
don't mind it being totally wrong from what's on the record. :)

This is a love song falling in "love" with a young girl on the rock tour She aint waiting til she gets older, (11-16 years old) Her feet are making tracks in teh winter snow,(feel her makin tracks'- she is a coke groupie, snorting or shooting the 'snow') She got a rainbow that touches her shoulder,(she is bi-sexually experimental) She be headed where the thunder rolls,(she is a rocker, played live, the lyric was often "where the silence goes", ie. she won't last long) Ah,ah,ah She got rhythm, (Hot sexual natural!!!!!) Got that rhythm,of the road (party girl) Ah,ah,ah She get crazy, (sexually wild and party wild) Woman get crazy if she cant go ("she can go"- like crazy in lust, or can't be trapped) Ah but ah,she just looking good.(cannot blame her, she is caught up in her powerful attractivity) She comes like the secret wind (her sexuality is secret, secrets, she arrives as a surprise- not all the time, 1 in 20) Shes as strong as the mountains, walks tall as a tree. (she is strong willed and strong presence) She been there before, she'll never give in,(will not love you, no matter what you try, she will not stay, been hurt, etc) She'll be gone tomorrow like the silent breeze.(bye bye, heart breaker that she is, she is going to go) Ah,ah,ah She got rhythm, Got that rhythm,of the road Ah,ah,ah She get crazy, She get crazy if she cant go Ah but ah,she just looking good.(still was worth it, so to speak) You know how sometimes, you got to rush, You're running blind, but she jumps the gun.(she still needs her sex) Question is,not does love exist, but when, she leaves, where she goes.(pride, who will get her next?) I got a feeling she dont know either,(she is drifting, no goal) Wait like the wind, watch where she blows.(sexual innuendo of a blow job) Oh,oh, got that rhythm, That sweet rhythm,of the road Oh,oh,oh she get crazy, Woman get crazy,if she cant go Oh,oh a looking good Ah yes! the song has a melancholy ending, especially live, reminiscent of "little dreamer" ending

This was written By David Lee Roth when he was in broke his foot doing a photo shoot for Van Halen 2 (the pix on the back where he's jumping) . He recived a bunch of get well cards from fans from Albuquerque NM, the cards were all native american themed with little proverbs in them ie:"She got a rainbow that touches her shoulder, She be headed where the thunder rolls". He just took all the little sayings and wrote around them about his favorite subject "Women"

I was listening to it again, and if you listen to the last part again, dave changes the lyrics, "she got that writha', the sweet writher, of the rug", another sexual reference in disguise...
