5150 - Van Halen
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Transcribed by Paul D.
Here's the signature riff of the song (play it FAST!):

Okay, this next part you repeat twice. One time with the first ending
that I've tabbed out (marked between the 1>>>> and
replacing the first ending with the second (2>>>> to
the part played behind the chorus ("Always one more; you're never
satisfied..."):
E-|-2------|-------2-2-----4-|-4-----------|-------4-4-----2-|-2--------------|

D-|--------------|------0-0--0-0--0-0---|---------------|----|--/7---7---||
This next bit is played behind the verses. It's basically just crunching
out a D power chord with the low D thrown in. Eddie does a little bit of
extra stuff (which I tabbed out here) but you really don't need it unless
you're really anal and want to be exact...
E-|--------------|-----------------|-------------|---------------||
B-|--------------|-----------------|-------------|---------------||
G-|--------7-----|-7---------------|-----------0-|-0-------------||
D-|--------7-----|-7---------------|--0--------5-|---------------||
A-|--------5-----|-5------5p3p0----|-----0-5p3---|---0-5~~-0-3~~-||
D-|-0--0-0---0-0-|----0-0-------4b-|-------------|---------------||
E-|-----------||
B-|-----------||
G-|-----------||
D-|-----------||(repeat throughout verses)
A-|----5----3-||
D-|-/7----7---||
Here's what I guess you'd call the "pre-chorus" ("Still we try; win or lose;
take the highs; with the blues..."). Play it twice through, only the second
time, leave out the first measure (A-2-3-2-3-2-3/5). Then rake your pick
down the low strings before you go into the next riff.
E-|---------------|-----------------|-----------------|--------------0--------|
B-|---------------|-------------2---|-3-------2-5-----|-5p3---3---2--3--------|
G-|---------------|-------2-4-2---2-|-------2-----2-0-|-2-----2---2--2--------|
D-|---------------|-----2-----------|-----2-------0-0-|-0---0---0----0--------|
A-|-2-3-2-3-2-3/5-|-0-0-------------|---0-------------|-----------------------|
D-|---------------|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------------|
E-|-0--------------||
B-|-3------3-3-----||
G-|-2------2-2-----||
D-|-0------0-0-----||
A-|----------------||
D-|----5-5-----5-5-||
This next part is (in my opinion) the coolest riff in the song. This is
just a fill-in between the pre-chorus (above) and the chorus (WAY above).
Play this one time through then go to the chorus riff (tabbed above).
E-|----------------|------------------|------------|-----------------|
B-|----------------|------------------|------------|-----------------|
G-|----------------|------------------|------------|-----6---------7-|
D-|-------2-5~~----|---5-4~~------7\6-|-----3-7----|---7-----5---7---|
A-|-2-2-2----------|-5--------5-5-----|---3--------|-7-----3---5-----|
D-|-2-2-2--------5-|------------------|-3--------7-|-----------------|
E-|0~~~~---|--9--9--7--7--9--9--10--10\||
B-|--10~~--|-10-10--9--9-10-10--10--10\||
G-|-----11~|---------------------------||
D-|--------|---------------------------||
A-|--------|---------------------------||
D-|--------|---------------------------||
That's it. Just arrange those basic riffs in order by listening to the song
and you'll have the main structure (sans solo). The solo is more than I'm
willing to attempt to play OR tab.
Corrections/augmentations/comments welcome...
Good luck!

Check out Led Zepplin then. Their my most favorite band of all time. Or else Maroon 5. But this song kicks serious ass. It's the first song I heard from Van Halen years ago and it still rocks today.

Van Hagar is right on. All due respect, DragonKnight, but are you fucking kidding me? Maroon 5? Van Halen is a band that thrives on skill and hard rock, while Maroon 5, though they have a couple of half-decent hits, are a fucking pop music-based band. There should be a law against comparing great bands like Van Halen with shit bands like Maroon 5. Where are Maroon 5 now, by the way? They are fast fading, fucking flavors of the week. Van Halen started in '73 and lasted all the way to 1998, with sporadic performances after that. Maroon 5 have only got, what, two albums? How many times have Van Halen gone multi-platinium? Maroon 5 can't even spell the word "platinium". But Maroon 5 is no worse than cock-sucking, ass-licking, uncle robert-auntie suzie-fucking posers modern "rock" bands like Nickleback, three doors down, lifehouse, creed, etc. How dare they shame and whore the name and spirit of rock music by calling their lame-ass, all-riff-no-skill-or-drum/bass/guitar solos songs ROCK? I'm not kidding but i can outplay all the guitarists of all these modern "rock" bands any time of the day, with one hand tied to my back. Talentless fucks. As for what the song means, I don't know. Thanks. Love, Eddie Truck Halen

> He named the song 5150 because to him it represented what the > "new band" was all about concerning sound and substance. And by > new band I mean the band fronted by Sammy. That's wrong. The album 1984 was recorded in 5150. It was built out of frustration with Roth about their musical direction, particularly how Roth didn't approve of all the keyboards.

This song is amazing and 5150 might just be my favorite Van Halen album, Sammy rocks out... To even compare a band lie Maroon 5 to Van Halen is beyond ridiculous... In fact, it should be considered an insult to all things ridiculous....

TD Phoenix is right. It's about a selfish woman (I assume since Sammy's straight and he's singing it) who always want's "one more," never content with compromise and sharing. Thus, she wants things 51/50 instead of 50/50. Also, I never thought of the other meaning of the fact that it's a police code for criminally insane, but that could apply to the person Sammy's singing to.
