| I see it as referring to attaining some form of enlightenment. The ocean as a symbol of the One reality that we are all a part of but don't realize. Sailing off into the mystic is like returning home. And, the references to the "girl"... I believe the boat and the girl are synonymous. Her love, THEIR love will bring them to this place. It's beautiful, Love + Mysticism. | |

| 'Bonnie Boat' from the traditional Irish Skye Boat Song "Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing Onward, the sailors cry Carry the lad that is born to be king Over the sea to Skye." Also from Burns Poem Tam o'Shater: But Tam kend what was what fu' brawlie: There was ae winsome wench and waulie, That night enlisted in the core, Lang after ken'd on Carrick shore; (For mony a beast to dead she shot, And perish'd mony a bonie boat, And shook baith meikle corn and bear, And kept the country-side in fear.) | |

| This song to me is quite funny realy. in a way anyway. it reminds me of one of my old girlfriends who couldnt ever really let herself fall in love or get close to anyone (hence the gypsy soul) and him wanting to rock it! into the mystic i think does mean the unknown of love. the sailors are the men whoo were before and understand the prediciment and the foghorn is a i'll be their when you call kind of thing. also when he refers to way back in the days of old i think that explains how love used to be true and real when you didnt realy undertand anything about it (not that many of us do now) but when you were young (before the lust part) and you actualy just wanted to be with someone. a brilliant song. though my interpretation simple some of the best songs are! great songwriter great poet. | |

| To understand this song you have to understand van... which is why very few people understand this song, and no body knows for certain. But in a number of his songs he brings up the level of astral plane of reality (astral weeks, slipsream, many other songs) for those of you not quite up to date on your es. docterine, astral is the plane of reality right above our own, where only the skilled can see and remember what they have witnessed(hint "dreaming") although this doesnt completely explain the song, it helps explain atleast what the "mystic" is. P.S. any van fan should have the Astral weeks CD, Ranked number 19 of all time by rolling stone, the kicker is its only sold 300,00 copies, so lets change that part. | |

| I noticed one problem with the lyrics. They forgot one of the most important lines in the song, and Van's career!. How could they leave out the classic IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was the closing line to all of his early shows. It was his catch phrase. His equivilent to "does anybody remember laughter?". He did name one greatest albums after this line. The double live album "..IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW...." is his best, and one of the best live albums of all time. | |
