I kind of disagree that the songwriter himself is being pessimistic here. I think it's more of a tongue-in-cheek message about how some people are only concerned with their own problems when they have a broken heart.

i think its on the same level as venus in furs, but a completely different song. i listened to this song for like a week straight all the time after i first heard it. what a fucking chorus!

yeah they someone coughs! which only adds to the dreadful and so far never repeated pessimism of the song, disguised by the happy beatlesy melody. i adore it.

This song sounds eerily like the Beatles "Here comes the sun", it seems to me that the entire album "Loaded" is maybe an attack on the Beatles
