Song: The drugs don't work (Radio Edit)
Group: The Verve
Album: Urban Hymns
This is the second single of the Verve's album Urban Hymns. The song is really easy to
play. Nice chord progression. The Verve have been around
since 1989 but all of a sudden they have become commercially popular.
Yet their music has always stayed quite similar and their classic work
is often their oldest stuff. So if you like this and their newer music
try out old music like "a northen soul" and "a storm in heaven".
Chords used:
C alternates between X32013 and X32003 (uses second version to got to Am)
Am alternates between X02210 and X02200 (uses second version to got to Em)
Em 022000
F (Barre chord) 133211
G 320033
NB C somtimes drops from X32013 to 30013 (But you can figure out where!)

(Original Demo Lyrics)
(Note "drug make ME worse" - pre-commercial/sanitized version)
All this talk of growin' old
is gettin' me down my love
like a cat in a bag
waiting to drown
I know I'm coming down
and I hope you're thinking of me
as you lay down inside
now the drugs don't work
they just make me worse
but I know I'll see your face again
cause baby ooohhhh
if heaven calls I'm coming too
and baby ooohhhh
if heaven calls I'm with you
But I know I'm on a losing streak
I passed down my old street
and if you wanna stop
then give me a shout
and I'll come running down
you know I will
But the drugs don't work
they just make me worse
and I know I'll see your face again
cause baby ooohhhh
if heaven calls I'm coming too
cause baby ooohhhh
if heaven calls I'm coming too
Just like you said
I'm better dead, when I ain't got you
Just like you said
I'm better dead, when I ain't got you
but if you wanna show
then just let me know
and I'll sing in your ear again
but the drugs don't work
they just make me worse
but I know I'll see your face again
like a cat in a bag
waiting to drown
I know I'm coming down
now the drugs don't work
they just make me worse
and I know I'll see your face again

| "Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown" just might be the most depressing lyric ever. I did hear that this song was written for Richard Ashcroft's dying father, but if that's the case, why do parts sound so romantic? ("My love," etc.) | |

| After listening to this song and reading the lyrics I have decided it's a song about somebody's wife or girlfriend or something and they are dying of cancer. The drugs that don't work are the chemo drugs I'm guessing, cause chemo drugs make you worse as in really sick and stuff. Well that is what I think, I don't know much. I totally love this song, it's really sad. | |

| you can refer to your dad or someone in your family as "my love", because simply you love him. It's not weird, at least from a foreign perspective (Mexico). I believe he tells him "my love" not as in a gay/coupling way, but as a family loving way. I don't see anything strange in it. Great song, by the way. Luckily I still have my dad around, but this is the way I think I'm gonna feel when he leaves... like a cat in a bag... | |
