The Freshmen - The Verve Pipe

- CHANGE FONT SIZE (PT. 8) AND USE A FIXED-WIDTH FONT -

Tabbed by: Steve Jang - I also tabbed out "Don't Speak" by No Doubt

I included the lyrics so that it would be easy to denote which riff to
play
and the Guitar 2 Fills. Not everything in the song follows this tab
EXACTLY,
so improvise a little and listen to the song for the very minor parts.

Intro: (Riff 1. 2X w/ Fill 1. and Fill 2. the 2nd time)

Verse 1: (Riff 1.)
When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt-stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no

Pre-Chorus: (Riff 2.)
I can't be held responsible, 'cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place

Chorus: (Riff 3.)
For the life of me I can not remember
What made us think that we were wise, and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I can not believe
We'd ever die for these sins, we were merely freshmen (Fill 1. and Fill
2.)

Verse 2: (Riff 1.)
My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept
And now he's guilt-stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept, he says

Pre-Chorus (Riff 2. w/ Fill 3. 4X)

Chorus (Riff 3. w/ Fill 3. 4X at the end)

Verse 3: (Riff 3.)
We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

Pre-chorus (Riff 2. w/ Fill 3. 4X)

Chorus (2X - Riff 3.)

Outro (Riff 1. 2X w/ Fill 1. and 2. played 2X)

I always knew this song as what Dr. Zotro explained. The whole babys breath thing always kinda got me though. ]Maybe as the lead singer looks at the past he thinks well maybe he did love her and shouldn't have thrown her to others and now looking back saying she could have been the one. I mean i could be completely off but this is one of those songs that really touches everyone that listens to it, but in their own little way. Freshman in it self is exactly what it says but if we all look back at our younger years we see those regrets that we didnt even see as regrets at the time and alot of them have passed us by.

"The Freshman" is a true story about the Verve Pipe's relationship with a "groupie" that some of the band members used for sex. They basically passed her around between members. Eventually she fell in love with one or more of the members and they pushed her away. She tried to renew her friendship / relationship with them and they again pushed her away. She comitted suicide. The song is about their guilt from treating her badly which may or may not have caused he suicide. "I won't be held responsible. She fell in love in the first place......For the life of me; I cannot remember what made us think that we wise and we'd never compromise." Sad but true.
