Subject: TAB:Kiss Off by the Violent Femmes

Here is my (I think) semi-decent transcription of Kiss Off by the Violent
Femmes from their debut. If any one has any additions or corrections, please send 'em in.
The only tough thing about this song is that the strumming pattern is a bit
weird. I don't know how to explain it, but play w/ it a bit & you should get
it.
C Am (pick the C chord from
verse is Am until "could it be you, could it be you?" the bottom up then
down a couple strings.
Am again until it goes to the C on "if you're just sick", then back to Am...

the transition chord is a G (between this & chorus.)

E G E G
you can all just kiss off into the air, behind my back I can see them

E G E D
stare, they'll hurt me bad but I won't mind, they'll hurt me bad, they do it

G D G D
all the time (yeah yeah) yeah they do it all the time (yeah yeah)..etc.

those chorus D's are a bit weirdly strummed too...just listen tho'.

back to Am for the "Permanent Record" verse...for the break I usually play
something like Am-C-G-Am-C-G-D-G-D...I don't worry about being too precise
though, I think it probably changes a bit every time they play it. Just wig out
a lot, especially on the last D's, & you'll be fine. For Gordon's 1-10 count,
just come in on an Am gradually until
"Everythingeverythingeverythingeverything!" which is a G. Last chorus is the
same as the 1st, end the song on a Am.
That's it! send complaints, love letters, & useless Femmes info to

Um... reading over the lyrics, this could be about popping pills or cutting.

Violent Femmes are the shiznit. Awesome, they are. "I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record Oh yeah? Well don't get so distressed; Did I happen to mention that I'm impressed?" Best lines. For me anyways. :)

(if that made any sense to anyone whsoe not in my head) x

The permanent record line refers to trouble that they got in while preforming on stage in high school and causing a near riot. The line was spoken to them.

"I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record Oh yeah? Well don't get so distressed; Did I happen to mention that I'm impressed?" What's this part about? It sounds like those kids who think they're so cool cause they get in trouble at school. Hm. I love this song though. I made a shirt of this song. People liked to read it aloud and it was so annoying I didn't wear the shirt again.

The Violent femmes...they bring all their equipment on the bus. An you can't f*** with the Violent Femmes...You cannot f**** with this band. They are just the ultimate alternative band, perhaps the first real alternative band of the 80's. Anyways, this song is about suicide. The person singing it says "I need someone, a person to talk to...someone to care, to love...could it be you..." He is pining for a love unrequited. The counting lines is him counting the pills he is taking to OD and giving the reason for taking each pill.. He is telling the world to "kiss off" because he thinks he will show everybody by killing himself.

I always felt this song wasn't necessarily about suicide. If you look at the lyrics, it could just as easily be about drug addiction, using pills to plug a hole in your life. "They'll hurt me bad but I won't mind They'll hurt me bad, they do it all the time " that line just always stuck in me as being about drugs, but I guess it could be a guy who attempts suicide often (don't laugh, I know people who've tried MANY times).
