a little off, (Jakob can slurr like only a Dylan can [I mean that in a good
way]).

There's four chords throughout: E - B - F#min - A (Open E, B at 7th, ect)
(You can add open high E & B's as drone notes). Sounds best
"unplugged". I
heard a GREAT version which was without drums and bass. Only vocals,
resonator
slide guitar (try a National Duolian!) for solo fills and background
accordion were playing.
My thanks to Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers for this one! SIXTH AVENUE HEARTACHE by The WALLFLOWERS

I play it in a different key than the recorded version: (E as opposed to F?)
There's four chords throughout: E - B - F#min - A (Open E, B at 7th, ect)
(You can add open high E & B as drone notes). The original, if you like
would be
F, C, Gmin and B flat, just capo at the first fret and finger the chords
as shown.
Play a full barre on the F#min if easier.

i am really not sure what this song means... but i think it has something to do with life in a big city and how cruel it can be... altho i am prolly wrong. my first clue was the name... "6th Ave. Heartache" if you think about it, almost all major cities in the US have a 6th ave. and ppl rush around, not really paying attn or caring. i think the first verse talks about a shoot out, and how he doesn't know what to do, and the "weight of the world" is crushing him. the chorus talks about a black line. i am guessing this might be referring to the boundary line that seperates the classes in society. i don't know why i think this... it just popped into my head. i can't really relate this to the rest of the song. the rest of the song goes on to talk more about the busy streets and the cruel world. Anyways i think i have this all wrong... but no one has posted anything yet... plz correct me

I think the comments about city life and Jakob's father definately make sense. You do get an erie sense that the homeless guitar man could be a stand in for Bob in the song. Personally, my completely uneducated opinion has always been that this is an existential love song about how in a cruel, uncaring world, shared pain ("the same black line that was drawn on you / was drawn on me") can be the only form of communion that two people can truely share. Also, am I wrong to think that the use of "6th Avenue," often connected to shopping, and that "black line," often used as a financial term ("in the black"), in the song is a subtle condemnation of the capitalistic system that has caused the homeless man's problems? Perhaps I'm stretching that a bit much, but it makes some kind of sense.

this is a great wallflowers song, but it's even better because adam duritz of the counting crows sings back up and the mixture of jacob dylan and adam is amazing :)

I have to agree with the last comment; the song is about the busy city and Dylan's role in it. I believe in the song he goes on to say while he tours the country's cities he feels like he never has a home because he's constantly moving. In the second verse he relates himself to a homeless man in the line, "singin' songs I knew complete." In the last verse Dylan also refers to making it big and he thinks of a time when another musician's music has touched that city by saying the 6 string is on the wall. The he says in the end the both moved on.

but also, Jakob has said that he often uses metaphors that create visual images that some may take litterally, so i may be waay off.

i think this is a song about not belonging. To me, it seems as if the guy is almost out of sync with the rest of the world. (I held my hands, never knew how to act). Whilst the rest of the world is moving at a fast pace (sirens ring, the shots ring out, A stranger cries, screams out loud) he's just standing there watching the homeless man. It's like he's not caught up with everyday things but notices the small details in life. The last two lines add to the sense of not belong as he's leaving - just like the homeless man did from a world where he didn't fit in. But that's just what i think.
