I think this song was written by Rivers with a subliminal intent of saying how he feels his song writing should be for the new album, and what it means to him. He wants the love of the radio and reviewers and music fans for going back to what he knows best, which is writing 'simple pages' aka 'simple pop songs.' when he refers to you he is talking to himself, so he says 'can't you see where to be this time' as opposed to the darker pinkerton songs he wrote which are the 'wrong wrong way to go.' He says at the end, 'can't you see, you're just me', which is further proof that he's writing to himself about what kind of music he wants to make from now on.
