| "But there's just something wrong with ya Just feel like you're the hardest button to button" "He started crying It sounded like an earthquake It didn't last long Because I stopped it" its about how fustrating and fucked up people and just life can be.Wich makes u be purposely want to be naive and ignorant. "Now it's easy when you don't know better" or just feel empathy for other people, eventually. | |

| I think this whole song is literal. I think it is about him as a child (my ma gave birth and we were checking it out) living in an old house. He was the baby boy in this song. He was crying and the parents used voodoo to stop it (I grabbed a ragdoll and stuck some little pins in it.) The section about people thinking its sleazy (because they don’t know better) then putting it in a letter, and about them keeping warm means that the family is just making enough of an income to keep them selves warm (food shelter warmth) and people think they’re way of life is abusing their child so they write a letter to someone (i dunno, child abuse, something like that) but they don’t know the circumstances (ie: because they don’t know better). And when they say "just feels like your the hardest little button to button" they are talking about how having society accept them is the hardest thing to make happen. (Lets say that the buttons are on a coat. It would seem like they are covering something up and they can manage to do that fine, until they reach the button that is society because people think there is something going on, and they can't seem to get people to think otherwise, thus finishing covering up their secret.) When he says he had opinions that didn’t matter and a brain that felt like pancake batter he is talking about feeling unimportant. Then he says “I have a backyard with nothing in it, except a stick, a dog, and a box with something in it” I think he is saying that he has an empty backyard except for a dog, a stick and a box. The stick would be a grave marker and the box with something in it is a box (or coffin) with a dead body in it. (It might be the dog’s body). I’m pretty sure of this part because in the beginning of the song “lets build a home” Jack (the little kid ((this is a recording of him as a child))) say’s “I wish I had a little red BOX to put my best friends in. I’ll dig them up and put them back again.” I think little jack was talking about putting his best friends bodies into a BOX (see where I’m going with this?) My final piece of evidence supporting this section of the song, is that, Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana, one of my fav. bands) changed the title of the song, heart shaped COFFIN, to heart shaped BOX so that people would have to infer from his songs. Finally when he is saying “hardest button to button” over and over again, he is talking about (again) how keeping their secret (a dead body, possibly murder) away from society is the hardest thing to do. I think he might be talking about murder or something because the song sounds very dark to me and he builds up his parents as being disturbed like that when he says they moved into an old house (sorta creepy) and they used voodoo on their son. THERE! That’s my opinion on this song. But you can think whatever. | |

| It sounds kinda scary. Cuz its like he had this little brother and he hated him so much and he wished he would die(voo doo doll) and well it actually did. so they moved on(new house) but he feels so guilty about it. the hardest button to button would be the one on the babys clothes when they get him ready to be buried. hes trying to tell him slef it wasnt his fault(easy when you didnt know better) but deep down its his fault and his heart is emtpy(backyard with nothign in it). he just cant let the death of his brother go. eh?? yeah thats what i got out of it. i like jacks lyrics cuz they can means different things to different people. | |
