i'm so sure this has nothing to do with incest whatsoever. it's like telling women to remember that they're women in a male dominated world i think. the 'difference between a father and a lover' could be telling a woman that not all men are as sincere and generally frightening as her father. at first i thought it said 'a father and a mother' and i was like '..work it out?', but no it is clever. and i think meg's voice is gorgeous in this song :) a pretty voice to match a pretty face.

i think father might actually be like father as in father figure. like does someonce just care about you or is it more. i think that's what he means

i love the white stripes but this song SUCKS! meg just sucks at singing plus this is a stupid song. the song dosent mean shit its just a stupid song thats just meg trying to be in the limlight plus the song just repeats itself, but ill tell ya what though meg is real good lookin and her drum playin complements jacks guitar, i thikn she should just stick with drums and quit singing especially since the words in the songs she does suck

I love this simple song, and I think it means that there are two kinds of guys out there. One will treat you like a kid, like he's your father or something and can tell you what to do. The other will love you and let you do what you want. The first kind only likes you because you're something he can conrol. The second kind loves you and doesn't have to control you. That's my take on the song anyway.

by crankypants on 08-06-2005 @ 02:31:31 AM Could it somehow be about how Jack refers to Meg as his sister since after their divorse? Saying something how she has to remember that Jack is no longer a lover or family? I may just be blowing steam. ------------------------------------------------------------ You could be right on that one...

The words are "between a father and a mother". I dont think the song has anything to do with incest, just feminism. Megs voice rocks

tommyjazz hit it on the nail. this song is about supporting females in a male dominated world. especially the lyric: Women, listen to your mothers don't just succumb to the wishes of your brothers = dont become submissive to men

I think the lyric "between a father and a lover" means knowing the difference between a man that will treat you like a child, or a man that will treat you as his lover/equal.

i think this song is telling women not to fight with eachother and backstab like girls tend to to. becuase it lets men walk all over them. and then they turn around and bitch about it being a male dominated world. not all women obviously, but you know. and i always liked megs voice. its beautiful even though its not polished or perfect.

Look, you guys, she is singing out of key! It musically sounds like shit! How could this possibly be pleasing to the ears? It's AWFUL! Not to mention she doesn't have to be preachy. And this is about how women look for their lost father figures in men. Take a step back and look at one another " means analyze the situation you're in and notice that he's just a father figure. I wish I could be as tolerant as bad singing as you guys are. Could you recommend me some William Hung, while you're at it? haha

"You need to know the difference, between a father and a lover" I think this is saying that she wants them to make sure they are marrying some that can be a father and someone that is just a one time lover or something to that persona.

yes, meg does sing it off key, but jack is responsible for the lyrics. he just wanted meg to sing them since it was a womans perspective.
