| I think this song is about a guy who has been trying for this girl for a very long time, but then she is taken away from him "everybody's reaction is changing you". He tries hard to get her back, but he fails. It's kind of about being deeply in love and having that taken away from you. When I listen to this song, it reminds me of being in love. And I too have had that taken away from me. I listen to this song constantly. | |

| i always thought that this song actually had meaning to jack. like in my mind, he's talking to maybe his mom or another lady, who he is trying to be respectful to but he's having trouble b/c she is so difficult. she's trying to say well you SHOULD be in a profitable businesses like oil, gold, shipping and real estate. She is asking him what he would have liked to be instead of doing music- and he says if he were anything else, she wouldn't like any better than what he is. he is saying that she really dosen't know him(I'll bet you five you're not alive,If you don't now his name) and that even though the white stripes have become popular, he's still the same person he always was and he's not going to change. he also wished she could love him for what he is. ~just a thought...or two | |

| "there is a man....." That was actually taken from the "celebration" scene from CK when the dancers sing and dance with Kane. It was weird when I actually found this out. I bought the cd when it first came out and listened to it religiously and then watched Citizen Kane in film class (i've seen it many times before) but my ears perked up when I heard the dancers singing the same lyrics in the white stripes song. It was freaking my other classmates out because I knew the words. | |

| i think that yeah, the guy screwed up, in some way, but it was the girl who eventually cut off the relationship, and told him that it was over forever, as in never getting back together. now, he wants to change her mind, he wan't to reverse the idea of forever in her mind--meaning that she wants to be forever apart, and he wants her back. | |

| hmmm.... i thnk this song is pretty much an innuendo... "But their love is only a fraction of what I can give to you Well, let's do it, let's get on a plane and just do it Like the birds and the bees and get to it" and "It could change if you want for the better Just tug at my shirt and lay down next to me" let's do it? birds and bees? lay down next to me? ya, sounds like it's pointing to one thing (and if you can't guess it you scare me). oh well. decent song- not the best on the album tho if you ask me | |

| Wow, that's awesome. Citizen Kane... Awesome. Like Robram, the 'speaking' bit reminded me of Jesus, except for the 'likes to smoke' bit! But now it all makes sense. Jesus indeed... Having said that though, Jack recently admitted that he almost became a preacher! nme.com have the details. Scintillating [spic] stuff. | |

| Everytime I spin this CD, this song grows on me more and more. It's so dynamic and dramatic. Jack really knows how to build a song and make it an emotional experience. | |
