This song is damn rad. The Stones Rock And ROll Circus one is phenomenal. IT's got some great stuff besides the who, but this one is cool. Also, I maybe clueless but there's water (orsomething) exploding at the end of the "you are forgiven" part, that always confuses me. It's so great though. But really what is that?

I wish the who wasnt so desparate for singles at the time that they shortened it down. It originally was a full length rock opera but they cut it down cause their management said they needed singles. this song is absolutely amazing though.

This song is great. I love the performance on the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll circus, Keith makes alot of funny faces and grimaces when he drums. On the DVD to that Pete says what the song is about and such, and adds that it is sort of about him in a small way, in which the song is about child abuse.

the live at leeds version is the best most definately. the story about the song can be heard at the end of "i'm a boy" on live at leeds. pretty thorough and funny explanation. i love john's bass playin/singing in the live at leeds. must hear for who fans.

I'm a big fan of the version used in the film Rushmore, and the album version (from A Quick One) is pretty solid as well. Fantastic song. I love the story it tells, and the fact that The Who sang "cello, cello" instead of actually using cellos (I think a depleting budget had something to do with it) adds another quirky touch to the song.

Actually I just got the Rusmore soundtrack and it IS NOT the version from rock and roll circus sorry about that. I don't know where to get that version of the song on CD except the Kids are alright soundtrack and I heard the quality of that CD is not that good.

Squided, I think you're on the right track for Bohemian Rhapsody since that too is an opera. This song rocks live and the lyrics are amazing in telling the story of the girl. In the Live at Leeds version of the song, Pete said "little girl guide" possibly to make the audience assume that she was a molested young girl and "her man" is really her father.

I have the Live at Leeds version, and John's part at the end is even better than the one at the Rock and Roll circus. I love John Entwistle.

i saw a video clip of what i assume was the rock and roll circus performance. it went from about part IV. absoloutley amazing. i got the song off a mate but i had no idea the song was this long. i was amazed to hear that John Entwistle could sing that high (the realy high part in part IV.) listen to this than boris the spider, great vocal range. incedentaly, i think bohemian rhapsody would be more influenced by stairway than this. same structure i.e. 3 movements, slow acoustic/piano part at the start. moves to a slow ballard then to a faster, heavier rock finish.

This has got to be one of my favorite Who songs ever. I love how it's 6 different songs in one...this kind of music should have caught on more.

I love this...one of Pete's first rock operas and influenced recent music...there are two tracks on the American Idiot album by Green Day that are kinda like this, a bunch of different melodies smashed in one track. Awesome song/story. Love it!

I know exactly what this song means. It tells the story of a young girl whose boyfriend or husband has been gone for "nigh on a year". She is very sad about this and her friends come up with a remedy to fix her problem. They hire Ivor the Engine Driver to have sex with her. The husband comes back and catches the two having sex. The little girl confesses and is forgiven. There, I said it. Woman: "Pete, I've heard alot about you and the group taking drugs. Does this mean you're blocked up on stage?" Pete: "No, it means I'm blocked up all the time."

If you love The Who you HAVE to buy the Kids Are Alright DVD and see this song perfomed. WOW! They were supposed to air the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus performance on T.V, but they didn't cause The Who showed up the Rolling Stones and made them look bad. Its on the commentary on the DVD. Unbelievable song one of The Who's best. And the Rushmore soundtrack version is the Rock and Roll Circus version. I bought the Rushmore soundtrack just for this song.

Ok I was able to extract the audio of this song from the DVD I own and convert it to MP3. Took me forever to figure out how to do it. But I have the best version in MP3 form it is about ten and half meg in size. If anyone wants it I might post it on the net or email it. If you would like it you can email me at timmybighands@hotpop.com The quality is very good a minor skip right at the beginning of the song, but other then that very good. It is 192bit rate.

I think this song inspired Bohemian Rhapsody with a handful of other Queen tracks. Especially the 4 part harmony at the start. I don't know what was going through Pete Townshend's head when he thought of writing a rock opera. Maybe it was excess that drove him to it but all I can say is "What a genius."

Amazing, Amazing song. Keith Moon's drumming during the introduction and conclusion of 'Ivor the Engine Driver' could quite possibly be one of the best individual musical performances I've ever heard. Simply Incredible.
