Then one day things weren't quite so fine
I fell in love with Lily
I asked my dad where Lily I could find
He said, "Son, now don't be silly.
She's been dead since 1929."
Oh how I cried that night
If only I'd been born in Lily's time
It would have been alright
It would have been alright

Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful
Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night

As Teerbigear pointed out, Pete Townshend demonstrates the power of the mnd in this song. The boy's dad knew a girl named lily & fell in love with her. And when she died, he missed loving her so much that he substituted her with her portrait. His son who felt lonely approached his dad for help & hs dad gave him the picture & asked him to use it. Pete also shows through the song how much of an impact your upbringing can have on you & if you are taught corrupt things, you end up behaving that - you do not know what is rght & what is wrong. Pete ends the song "mister, have you seen pictures of lily". A true masterpiece

i heard that its about some kid that couldnt sleep...he was like a freak insomniac and the only cure he found was when he was going thru some old porn mags from the 1920's (obviously) and found the pics of lily. he had to jerk off to pics of her.

This song is about masturbation, obviously. But apparently the radio deejays didn't catch wise because they played the record!

Yeah, I read in an article that "pictures of lily took the topic of masturbation firmly in hand..."

I think a better word for the pictures would be "pinups" or "cheesecake." I was going to say they were probably old pictures of a flapper, but since she DIED in the 1920's, that might not even be right, unless she died young. But if she died of old age in 1929, and these are pictures of a young woman, then we're talking pictures from 19th century. Especially in that case, the mental image of the kind of nasty, show-all porn that is such a vice of the modern age, would not apply.

this song is about masturbation. i was watching a show about the who, and roger daltry came right out and said it. But when I first heard it, I thought the song was romantic. Guess not....
