D5 F
Wide awake in the middle of the night
G D5
I wonder how she's feelin'
F C
Is it just a trick of the light
G D5
Or is her ceiling peeling?
F F
She's sitting up in bed, shakin' her head
G D5
At a copy of "True Confessions"
F C
Ooh, it must seem like a fairy tale
G D5
To a woman of her profession
[chorus]
F-G F-G
But was I all right? (was I all right?)
C F
Did I take you to the height of ecstasy?
F-G F-G
Was I all right? (was I all right?)
C F
Did a shadow of emotion cross your face
D5
Or was it just another trick of the light?
[Bass solo: over verse chords]
[chorus]
But was I all right? (was I all right?)
Did I take you to the height of ecstasy?
Was I all right? (was I all right?)
Did a shadow of emotion cross your face
Or was it just another trick of the light?
Come on, tell me
F C Dm
What's a nice girl like you doin' in a place like this?
Bb F C
They don't make girls like you no more
Dm Bb
And I'd like to get to know you
G Bb
On closer terms than this
G C
But I guess you've heard it all before
[opening riff]
D F
Lady of the night
G D
Won't you steal away with me?
F C
Lady of the night
G D
Won't you steal away with me?
F F
The money's lyin' on the floor, she looks at me
G D
Shakes her head and sighs
F
Out of time, out the door
C G D
Red light shinin' in my eyes
But was I all right? (was I all right?)
Did I take you to the height of ecstasy?
Was I all right? (was I all right?)
Did a shadow of emotion cross your face
All right?
But was I all right?
All right?

| I hate the way he doesn't seem to care about the girl in this song. Like, he says he sees "a shadow of emotion" in her face, but he brushes that thought aside straight away, all he cares about is whether or not he was any good. Typical guy... | |

| In defense of we of the male persuasion...the "shadow of emotion" IS the criterion he's using for whether he was "all right." It's kind of the same thing. Particularly since prostitutes aren't supposed to let emotion interfere with their work. | |
