[VERSE]
C G
Outside the house Mr. Simpson announced
C G
That Sally couldn't go to the meeting.
C G
He went on cleaning his blue Rolls Royce,
C G
And she ran inside a-weeping.
C G
She got to her room and tears splashed the picture
C G
Of her new messiah.
C G
She picked up a book of her father's life and
C G G/C G G
Threw it on the fire.

[CHORUS]
F
She knew from the start, deep down in her heart
G G/C G G/C G G
That she and Tommy were worlds apart.
F C
But her mother said, "Never mind, your part is to
D G G/C
Be what you'll be."

The theme of the sermon was "Come unto me and love will find a way."
So Sally decided to ignore her dad and sneak out anyway.
She spent all afternoon getting ready and decided she'd try to touch him.
Maybe he'd see that she was free and talk to her this Sunday.

[repeat CHORUS]

She arrived at six and the place was swingin' to gospel music by nine.
Group after group appeared on the stage and Sally just sat there cryin'.
She bit her nails looking pretty as a picture right in the very front row.
Then a D.J. wearin' a blazer with a badge ran on and said, "Here we go!"

[BRIDGE]

D7 G D7 G
The crowd went crazy as Tommy hit the stage.
D7 G
Little Sally got lost as the police bossed the

Crowd back in a rage.

Soon the atmosphere was cooler and Tommy gave a lesson.
Sally just had to let him know she loved him and leapt up on the rostrum.
She ran across the stage to the spotlit figure and brushed him on the face.
Tommy whirled round as a uniformed man threw her off the stage.

[Repeat CHORUS]

Her cheek hit a chair and blood trickled down, mingling with her tears.
Tommy carried on preaching and his voice filled Sally's ears.
She caught his eye. She had to try, but he couldn't see through the lights.
Her face was gashed and the ambulance men had to carry her out that night.

[BRIDGE 2]
D7 G D7 G
The crowd went crazy as Tommy left the stage.
D7 G
Little Sally was lost for the price of a touch and a
A7 D Dsus4 D Dsus4 D
Gash across her face. Ooooh.

Sixteen stitches put her right and her dad said, "Don't say I didn't warn ya!"
Sally got married to a rock musician she met in California.
Tommy always talks about the day the disciples all went wild.
Sally still carries a scar on her cheek to remind her of his smile.

[repeat CHORUS]

I was thinking along the same lines as Geek UK, but, eh, either way gets the job done.

To me, the "lesson" and "sermon" isnt litteral, its Tommy teaching through music. If you remember a quote from Amazing Journy it was "strange as it seems, his musical dreams aint quite so bad" At this point tommy is symbolic of how Townshed and The Who feel when their on the big stage. Tommy is the image of superstardom. How tommy didnt tell the Security to throw Sally off the stage shows how maybe bands dont want to push their crazy fans away, theres just an overwhelming amount of them. Thats just my opinion, plz no comments "what floaton said is a bunch of shit"

rushmore, I'm pretty sure it was the doctor who told Tommy to go to the mirror and the mother who smashed it. That's what the liner notes say. They're not lyrically perfect but I think we can rely on them to get characters right.

Just remember this the original TOMMY, TOMMY-THE MOVIE, and TOMMY-THE STAGE MUSICAL are differenet on a number of points. In the original Tommy, and stage(broadway) versions, Tommy sees his Step Father killed by Captain Walker. In the Movie version his stepfather Frank kills Captain Walker. And I always thought, to a degree, that in the movie he is so traumatized by what happens to his Mum and Step-dad. That he once again becomes deaf, dumb, and blind. And through the trauma and shock he imagines his own reality. And believes he is STILL the messiah. In the original he realizes that he is not a messiah. His parents DO NOT get raped and/or piliged. Tommy embraces the normal life. As in Listening to you...etc. It's him singing to the people, and then the people sing to him. Thereby forming a collective. Where all people teach and learn from everyone. As for the Broadway stage version. It became a story not of false Messiah but of celebrity. I think it's more accesible that way. And at the end he forgives and embraces his family. Mum, Dad, Kevin, and Uncle Earnie in forgivness.
