| petes mentor, meher baba, taught that people cant perceive god if they can perceive earthly things. this theory inspired pete to write about a boy who was deaf, mute, and blind, but later regained his senses and taught people what he learned about god while he could not sense the world around him. Halfway through recording the album, rock critic nik cohn gave the work-in-prgoress a mediocre review. pete knew that cohn was an avid pinball player, and so he told him that a twist in the story was coming where tommy became a pinball phenomenon. cohn loved the idea, and so pete wrote pinball wizard. | |

| As far as I interpret it, Tommy was never ACTUALLY blind, deaf and dumb, just completely withdrawn after witnessing the murder of his mother's lover. We know he saw and heard it from what he says in 1921. Seeing something like that when you're four or five. (which I think was his age then) is bound to have an affect on you, but it doesn't give you physical disabilities. Rather, it created an almost instantaneous emotional wall (If you'll pardon the Pink Floyd comparison) So, not being physically blind and deaf, it's not so amazing for him to end up being so good at pinball. | |

| It's like a dimbulb waking up on his 30th birthday and finding out he's a freaking genius. I love this song, just because of how well done it is. I love the acoustic intro and then Entwhistle tears into the piece with his heavy bass. The lyrics are beyond exceptional as well, so this song shall always remain a classic. | |
