| ok, i know this song is about man o' war (the horse), but beyond that, i'm at a loss. here's what i do know: "willie" was man o' war's groom. he did, in fact, say that man o' war was "the mostest hoss dat evah wuz." (and if you forget about secretariat, that's probably true.) re: "maybe back at that old Kentucky home..." man o'war was, of course, from kentucky. (as am i, hence my fondness for racehorses and bourbon). re: "saratoga," that was where man o' war lost the only race he ever lost, to a horse named, appropriately, "upset." in sum, i'm still trying to figure out what j.b. and the boys were gettin' at when they penned this ditty... | |

| The following are the official lyrics of the song...According to EverydayCompanion.com Willie said "he was the mostest horse" Mahubah, Fair Play, desert mama's boy Running in first, neither proud nor cursed Carries the weight like a child takes to its toy Side by side, souls of kind, different world Hearts of gold, limbs of steel, Man-Of-War Oh, place your bets boys, get out the gate in time Burn the books, you ain't seen nothin' yet Maybe back at that old Kentucky home That it was luck, we'll catch him if we can Fire inside, blaze of glory, space in time Heart of gold, limbs of steel, Man-Of-War Oh, Saratoga Graveyard of favorites Odds are more than one hundred Oh, Willie said Ooo, Saratoga Nowhere, nowhere to run War Admiral take the highest prize Three hundred thirty-nine little children Workin' the rail, never, never look back Fire inside, blaze of glory, space in time Heart of gold, limbs of steel, Man-Of-War Side by side, souls of kind, different world Heart of gold, bones of steel, Man-Of-War | |

| Mahuba was indeed Man O' War's dam (mother). The "Willie" that is referenced is Will Harbut, who was Man O' War's groom who said that Man O War was the "mostest horse". I hear "???? gonna take the highest prize" as "War Admiral takes the highest prize". War Admiral, who was Man O War's son, won the Triple Crown in 1937, d was one of Man O War's most successful offspring. | |
