-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: Tyler Estes
Email: ohdarn323@hotmail.com
Tuning: Standard
Intro: Am G
[Am]When I sat down on the bed next to you
You started to [G]cry
I said, [Am]maybe if I leave, you'll want me
To come back [G]home
[Am]Or maybe all you mean, is [G]leave me alone
At [C]least that's what you [G]said
[Am]You're irresistible when you get [G]mad
[Am]Isn't it sad, I'm [G]immune
[Am]I thought it was cute
For you to kiss
My [G]purple black eye
Even though I [Am]caught it from you
I still think we're [G]serious
At [C]least that's what you [G]said

| The guitar kicking in is so powerful...hard not to compare it to Radiohead's Creep because that electric guitar part becomes a character in the story. I got to see them perform an incredible show up close and personal in an old movie theatre last week. Amazing band with a bizarre, hypnotizing video running behind them carefully choreographed to the music. | |

| It's about a relationship that was never meant to be, no matter how hard they try to make it work. Then, after they break up, they see how stupid and empty the relationship was. There wasnt much good to look back on. Unbelievable. A musical triumph. I want to meet more fans of Wilco ( and Clinic too) because none of my friends like them. | |

| I agree with dblake that it does have to do with her hurting him. But to me it means a lot more than that. It's about the end of a relationship and all the hurt and frustration involved. The part "You're irresistible when you get mad Isn't it sad, I'm immune" just shows that things are over between these people. It's gotten to the point where they know each other so well and each other's little manipulations have no affect anymore. I don't know, but this song means more than the words I can write about it. | |

| mkilby is on point. I read Tweedy saying something about the headaches he suffered during the recording of AGIB making it painful to even talk. He hinted at that it was often easier to let the instruments tell the story than to sing. I guess that is why you get all the arena rock solos, such as on Hell is Chrome. When you see the live show, the songs seem to work even better than on the album. | |

| To me it seems like a song about somebody who's locked in an abusive relationship. Even the nature of the song has that passive-aggressive thing going on, apologetic one minute and raging the next. Whatever it means though, it's a fantastic song. One of the best of 2004 I'd say. | |

| This is indeed a good song, but it's probably the one I like the least on the albm is you exclude three quarters of "Less Than you Think". | |

| This song is confusing because of the two people speaking and you can't really tell who is saying what. I always thought of it as from the line "or maybe all you mean is leave me alone" on the song is not the narrator but the other lover. I don't know if I'm just hearing things but it sounds like on the studio album tweedy says "YOU thought it was cute for you to kiss my..." Not "I thought it was cute for you to kiss..." Just curious if anyone else hears that? He definitely says "I" in all the love versions I've heard. Hands down the best song on Ghost in my opinion. Tweedy says in the wilco book that he can't help crying when the guitar comes in because it sounds like a panic attack. | |

| tweedy's best neil young impression, instead of cheap imitation, comes off fresh and invigorating, OH GOD, the naysayers think that at worst, wilco is bringing together a cheap amalgamation of classic acts like neil young, rolling stones, beatles........ i beg to differ and this song is a great example of their greatness. Also the lyrics... holy crap. Amazing. "I thought it was cute for you to kiss my purple black eye, even though i caught it from you, i still think we're serious." It's like he's all upset, and she's comforting him oh please dont be sad, but if only she knew it's all her stupid fault. But not really, because people do things unintentionally. She didn't mean to treat him like she didn't love him as much as he loves her......... things just happen. And now it's a mess and the lover's quarrel invigorated the two | |

| I believe this song is about something that's talked about very rarely...Physical abuse by a wife, g/f, significant other on a man. It seems like it's trying to say that this is the attitude that society takes towards this subject...that a relationship in which the woman is the abuser is "ok" because we never hear about it for whatever reason. Just my two cents. And I look forward to seeing Tweedy play tonight. | |

| Amazing Song. It reminds me of an earlier relationship I had. You try to prove your love but the more you try the worser it gets. I think it's about to end a realtionship before it gets very bad and sad for both sides. | |

| this is what happens when people say things they do not mean or when people start to interpret and second guess other people's thoughts: everything becomes a mess. i love confusion! and i love the guitar in the second part of the song even better. but are they still serious? | |

| I like to think each verse of this song is supposed to be a direct quote from the narrator's lover up until the last line of each verse "At least that's what you said." Read like this, the song has much more poignancy and confessional power with the narrator admitting to causing his lover's black eye and casting much more doubt on the "seriousness" of the relationship. | |
