Seems to me that the joker and the thief are the same person (eg "the joker is a wanted man"), and what he's stealing is the girl ("wonder what would happen if he took her away"; "We are not goin' home"). Possibly a stalking/kidnapping (eg "Watching out every day"; pretty much the whole chorus), or maybe he just seduces her?

I'm pretty sure this means jesus as the thief actually and the joker as the devil. In the bible i think i remember from school that jesus was once referred to as coming like a thief in the night as in he will come unexpectedly at the rime of armageddon or something. and that ild beast part of the verse, 'ild' means fiery so reffering to the devil or the beast/joker. the second verse says see him laughing in the final hour, so armageddon again, he is still laughing even though he is going to be cast away into hell. "holding their dreams up to the light" so people are still hoping to go to heaven probably and the devil is still watching and causing trouble and shit. I reckon i'm pretty much 85% right here.

Hey, I think you might be right! You just gave me a whole new perspective on the song. Building off that.. "I said the joker is a wanted man, He makes his way all across the land," The joker is a rock star on tour. He's a wanted man because all his fans always want him to come to their town. "Always laughing in the midst of power," This is talking about life on tour. On stage, it's as if he's the king of the world, holding dominion over all the people in the crowd. "Always living in the final hour, There is always sweet in the sour," He's living life to the fullest and just having a blast. However, a rock star's life isn't as glamorous as most people think. Deep down, he's depressed and doing drugs to escape from all the damn attention. "Can you see the joker flying over, As she's standing in the field of clover, Watching out everyday, I wonder what would happen is he took her away," I think this is talking about a groupie. She's always there in the crowd, watching every show. The rocker is wondering if he might just be happier if he took her away and lived a simpler life away from all the stress of fame. "So I'll tell you all the story, 'bout the joker and the thief of the night," The joker and the thief are actually the same person; he effectively steals the night with his shows. "All the people that he see in the night, Hold their dreams up to the light," I believe this is a reference to all the lighters held aloft during a typical concert. Or maybe it's talking about groupies and how their dreams are to make it with him and they're all vying for his attention. Heh.. maybe.. Anyone agree? This is my favorite Wolfmother song no matter what it's about, though.
