Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a New York City-based rock band headed by lead singer Karen O. Other members are Brian Chase ( drums), Nick Zinner ( guitars), and Imaad Wasif ( guitars). Their music is a mix of retro styles with heavy rock/punk guitars, synthetic sounds and screaming, erratic and bluesy vocals. They formed in 2000 without Wasif, but in 2006 he began recording and touring with them.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut release was a self-titled EP, released in 2001. They followed this up with another EP, Machine, in 2002. In 2003 the Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their first complete album, Fever to Tell.
Fever To Tell was hailed by many critics as one of the best albums of the year in 2003. Their 2003 single, "Maps", received significant radio time, and the video to their 2004 single, "Y Control", was directed by acclaimed director Spike Jonze, who was involved with the band's lead singer Karen O for a period. The couple have since parted ways. In October 2004, their first DVD, Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow, was released, which included a concert filmed at The Fillmore in San Francisco, all of the band's music videos to date, and interviews.
Their second album, Show Your Bones, is set for release on March 28, 2006. It was erronously reported that the album was a concept album about Karen O's cat, but this was later proved to be false. Nonetheless, the album is thought to signal a change in their sound and Karen O has said that she wants to become a mainstream singer. The name of the new album was apparently inspired by "9 year old antigenius" Drake Barrett, describing what happens when you stick your fingers in an electric socket. On February 7, 2006 the YYY's released their first single of the new album titled Gold Lion. Gold Lion is noticible because of its acoustic sound that sounds quite a bit like Tegan & Sara.
