This is Stockholm Syndrome, by Yo La Tengo, from their fantastic "I Can
Hear the Heart Beating as One" record. The verses and choruses mostly
go like this except the 2nd chorus kinda walks down to the Am in the 3rd
verse. Not 100% sure of the words as they're a little hard to hear
amongst all the falsetto.

| These are purely my opinions and the views expressed herein are not necessarily the views of the band members. "What's the matter, why don't you answer? What's the matter with me?" This Line, I believe is an insecure pedophile asking his victim why she doesn't love him. "It is so hard to be Free and easy, we'll disappear completely Hardly as I've known it's glad." Maybe it's so hard to be free and easy because to be free and easy she'd have to break free of the restraints. And that's hard. By saying we'll disappear completely he might be saying I'm going to hide you where no one can find you. I have no Idea about the last line. "There's brighter places to see" This might refer to the dark basement he's keeping her in. "Hands need warning, early in the morning Hardly as I've known a surprise" First of all, I thought the word was "warming" and It makes more sense to me this way because he might be keeping her in a cold place. but maybe he's molesting her early in the morning and she is warning his hands to keep away. Due to his past experiences with this he is not suprised by this. "No, don't warn me I know it's wrong, but I swear it won't take long" This line is obviously supports my viewpoint. The way I see it, he is apologetically raping her. "And I know, you know, It makes me sigh; I do believe in love" Sighing could be a euphemism for moaning. By saying "I do believe in love" I think he is waiting, or hoping for Stockholm to set in. "Another season, but the same old feelings Another reason could be I'm tired of aching, summer's what you make it" He's had her there for the spring season and no stockholm. It could be her saying "I'm tired of aching" because of her restraints, abuse, etc. And I believe he is saying "The summer's what you make it" as if to say "Make the best of what you have, maybe you'll start having fun" "But I'll believe what I want to believe" He wants to believe that Stockholm is setting in. And he plans to keep her there until it does. FYI: I'm not a sick person. I'm just interpreting what meaning I hear in the song. I'm only sixteen for god's sake. | |

| This song touches me in a very special way, and I think that's because it's magical... simply magical. I don't recall having ever heard a sweeter song in my life. I first listened to it on 1998, when I was flirting with this girl who eventually became my girlfriend, a person with who I experienced many things and made me grow in many ways. Being her the best person I have ever met, I loved her with all my soul. But we didn't have a good start: after one week of relationship, she had second thoughts about me and so we broke up. She explained to me that I would regret being with her, that she feared love and that she had so bad experiences in her life with men that she didn't want to have heartaches again. On New Year's Eve, 1999, we were at the same party, and so I decided to speak with her and tell her now how did I feel at the time, and how I thought that the risk of this love was worth it after all, that I didn't mind suffering if that was the price to be with her at least one more week... She kept her mouth shut and stared at me as I spoke, but at one point she began to cry, and I didn't know why. In that moment... "Stockholm Syndrome" began to sound in my head. Today, now that years have gone by, I still remember that moment as a part of a beautiful movie made just for us. | |

| My take on the song is someone stuck in an emotional rut. They are singing this song to themselves. It has to do with a break-up but I don't feel the song is directed at the person singing. | |

| The lyrics should be: Hands need *warming* early in the morning Also, there are two really ambiguous lines in the song that I can't seem to figure out, but I'm pretty sure what's written above is not right. Hardly as I've known it's glad - should be Hardly as *alone* as glad - I think. And Hardly as I've known a surprise - probably should be Hardly as *alone* as surprised. | |

| I don't understand the lines that begin with "Hardly". The word doesn't seem to apply | |

| i love the meaning behind stockholm syndrome, its very interesting. It's when a hostage starts to side with the person holding them hostage because they become emotionally attached and sympathize with them. Yo La Tengo compares this syndrome to love. | |

| amazing song, yo la tengo sure can write a beautiful love song. whats even more amazing about their music is that sometimes a guy writes them so you get that angle, while some songs are written from a woman's standpoint. They juxtapose one another to really show that both genders feel angst towards the opposite. Really wonderful | |
