oops ... sorry beaches are NOT known for women in cowgirl outfits. Same can be said about "Ruby in the Dust", dust (something useless and dirty) is not usually the setting in which you would find a ruby (something beautiful and of value).

This man OWNED guitar. It he had it bending to his every whim, and at the end, he had it crawling longingly back for more. He had more raw power and emotion...he is the king of grunge, and so much more. GOD. It's that good. This song always makes me think he had someone he admired for her beauty, truly sparkling personality, or something. And longingly, he lets out with his guitar, singing an wonderful love ballad with both his instrument and his voice... Either way, he COMMANDS that guitar. It's wonderful. He has it wrapped snug 'round his finger. I wish I could play like him.

My ex always called me his "ruby in the dust". I always took it to mean the same sort of thing as diamond in the rough, something beautiful that hasn't grown into it. This song is so beautiful. Also, with the "has your band began to rust" it could mean that maybe she wore a promise ring, but isn't saving herself anymore.

The song, to me, is about a girl or young woman who is not constant in her relationships. She is old enough to change her name, or old enough to settle down and marry, but does not. "It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game." I always thought that this reffered to the female tendency to be inconstant. To be a flirt, or to just not want to commit to a relationshp, in other words. This woman knows it's time to stop playing around, but she just wants to keep going at the game.
