| I agree with Sexwith Skulls. An amazing song. One of Young's best and he is one of the best in my view. | |

| I agree it is about searching for that special person but not just a lover but the best in oneself. Thus the 'mining for a heart of gold' and 'being in my mind'. | |

| I think it's about searching for that someone. Definetly one of his best despite what neil thinks himself. He is one of the best. Stereophonics do a very good cover of this song. | |

| I don't think this is about love or a woman either. Everybody searches for a "Heart of Gold," whether that be love, success, peace, self-fulfillment. It is one of the most frustrating things to yearn for something that can never be achieved. There's a sense of helplessness in Neil's words. He said he's been to Hollywood and Redwood...a contrast between the glamour and natural settings. Keep in mind that Harvest is generally about aging, and growing older, and maybe even missed opportunities or things we can never find. | |

| Actually, I've been listening to this song for twenty-five years, thanks to my dad, and I've always thought it was his OWN heart of gold, like SeaHawkFan said. | |

| i think this is him searching for meaning in his life... for example "I've been to Hollywood I've been to Redwood" Hollywood represents fame, and everything unnatural or fake in the world. And i believe Redwood is a national park in California, which would represent peaceful, natural world. He has looked for meaning in fame, in nature, and is still unsure of his purpose | |

| Neil speaks about his search for a person that loves him back not just with the love that will leave him in the morning but the love that will stay with him for a lifetime and as the song progresses he realizes how hard it is to find this person and that he grows older in his search and the meloncoly tune show that hes losing hope but he keeps searching for a heart of gold someone he can love live with and give love to without feeling that the person is just in it for money or fame someone genuine i think whether you have found this person or you are still looking we all feel like this at one time and maybe our whole lives | |
